Single PSU for Dual R9 295x2

Tithonius
Go to solution Solved by WereCat,

The EVGA SuperNOVA 1300 G2 will be good. That is excellent PSU.

Ok, so as im sure you all know the R9 295x2 has some special requirements when it comes to power supplies. I will very soon be wanting to start a build where i will use two of them in a folding rig. what i need to know is if there is a power supply that can supply enough amperage for it to be safe. The requirements of the PSU can be found here: http://goo.gl/buBrRH

If i were to get a EVGA SuperNOVA 1300 G2 to power both cards as well as the CPU and everything else will i be safe to do so? if not a recommendation would really be appreciated.

Collecting every single CPU in existence? Is it possible? I have no idea, but i'm sure gonna try! http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/341848-dont-throw-away-old-cpus-im-collecting/

Just make sure that you connect the PCIe power connectors on the 295X2 with separate cables from the PSU, and you'll be good.

yeah, but will i have enough Amperage overall? The card has special amperage requirements... and so for two of them it can get dicey. i think they need a total of 28 Amps on each connecctor and a combined amperage of at least 50 amps per card total, and with a total of 108 Amps on the 12 volt rail of the Supernova 1300 G2, i think im okay, but that only gives me 8 amps of room.. Should i go with something different?

I want to be REALLY sure because i really dont want to damage these cards once i get them put together. Should i go with a bigger PSU with more amperage?

Basically they're saying that each card should be able to be allotted 600W each. This is a bit overestimated and in reality each card at stock speeds will draw around 520W maximum. With the 1300G2, that leaves 260W left for the rest of the system, which will be perfectly fine. Just make sure that you turn the ECO fan OFF, to have the fan running all the time to give it adequate cooling.

But the AMPS are different then Watts, they make it VERY clear that i need enough Amps to power the cards

Because there will be people who use PSUs that say 750W but in reality can only deliver like 40A on the 12V rail (480W) while the rest is 5V which is useless and just used to bump up the sticker rating of the PSU.

Voltage x Amps = Watts, the EVGA 1300G2 has 108A on the 12V rail, so it's a very negligible full capacity compared to it's full rated 1300W. It can pretty much deliver all of it's power on 12V alone.

Again, 50A is an overestimate. In reality they'll take AT MOST about 43-44A each. 88A on 12V will leave you with 20A left which is more then enough for CPU and other smaller power draw components.

@Aniallation Okay, ill take your word for it. I dont really feel comfortable with it, but if you say it will work then hopefully it would work. I would really feel comfortable upping the PSU to the EVGA 1600W G2, but if you dont think its worth it, then hopefully i wont burn my place down

You have to remember that this will be in a folding rig, so it wil be pulling that power almost 100% of the time. should i up to the 1600 scince I will be folding on the thing?

Since you can afford two 295X2's just for folding in the first place then yeah I would step up to a 1600W for the extra headroom and efficiency.

The 1600G2 is nice but there's also the Lepa G1600. http://pcpartpicker.com/part/lepa-power-supply-g1600ma

It's cheaper then the 1600G2, is one of the officially recommended 295X2 PSUs, and received great review ratings from the likes of HardOCP and JonnyGuru. It's the one I'd go for.
