HD 9000 renamed to Radeon R9-XXXX

samuel

Sounds cool for me! And it makes some sense... "A" for APU's, "R" for" GPU's. Maybe the new gen will be out of the HD league? :D Hopefully not first gen FX vs Phenom II style...

I like it, the middle R9 is a notation for the GPU generation followed by the typical xxxx naming scheme. So there will be R10, R11, R12 and so on.

So ill guess the top end card for the supposed 9000 series will be AMD Radeon HD R9 - 1970 , wow thats a mouthful though

Quite a dumbed down system to me :p and I like it xD it sounds much cooler to say "I have an r9-i950" than "9950"

You guys seem to be misunderstanding it.

From the article:

Meet the Radeon R3 and Radeon R5

Few weeks ago SemiAccurate spotted something interesting in the latest drivers:

AMD Radeon APU A6-6200 with R3 Graphics
AMD Radeon R5 M200 series

Both entries indicate that we are expecting at least two performance segments: entry-level R3 and R5. Of course this would be followed by R6, R7 and so on. SemiAccurate thought that the M-part in M200 label is just to indicate that we are looking at a Mobile GPU. What it also means is that AMD would rewind the naming to x200, so we may not see any x970 Radeon card after all.

Meet the Radeon R8 and Radeon R9

I made a short analysis, the new naming could look like this:

Radeon 9970-> Radeon R9-xxxx -> R9-(i)970 followed by R9-(i+1)970
Radeon 9870 -> Radeon R8-xxxx -> R8-(i)870 followed by R9-(i+1)870

Meaning a Radeon HD 9970 would be called the Radeon HD R9-1970 which would be followed by the R9-2970 and so on.

It seems the RX (where X is the number) represents the power within the series. The i in (i970) represents the generation.

So a R9-1970 is a first generation (of using this naming scheme) 970 or the most powerful single GPU of this series. An R9-2970 would be the generation after this.

RX-i970 where X is power in that generation and i is the generation number. At least that's how I view it based on how they explained it.

It doesn't make any sens to use R9-X9XX . The "power" of the generation is named twice.

That's true, but that's what the article said.

Someone in the comments suggested this:

R9 sounds nice, guess they trying to make it like i7 in graphics.

So if they already start 200 series with R5:

9970 - R9-(x)270

9950 - R9-(x)250

9870 - R7-(x)270

9850 - R7-(x)250

and so on up to R5 and R3

That makes more sense.... sorta. Though I don't see why bother. It's not like this helps anything.

Interesting..

"Hey man I just got a new R9-D970!!"

"Wow cool man.. wait what's that again?"

"Basically a 9970.."

Is what I see happening.

R3 and R5 for entry (APU), R9 for Radeon HD, R7 for ??????????

just like x330, x770, x590, x990.

So, at least to my understading it isn´t that bad, it may even hint to some pretty high-end apu solutions as the R7, not integrated graphhics, but also not standalone sultions, maybe a separate card that actuates along the processor, one only can dream

honestly unless your gpu cant handle modern games at high 1080p then the radeon 9000 series isnt all that appetising, obviously the performance seekers will jump on it if all this speculation is true but never the less im just gonna wait for the 7950 to plumet inprice and grab me another one... =) the crossfire fixes should be fully and completely implemented into the drivers by then....

How do you know? There are no benches for the new cards nor do we know the process its being manufactured on or the actual tech specs, everything is rumor until release.

I like the name. Its better than the dumb GTX thing Nvidia does. They need to release it before the end of of the year. I cant wait too long.

is it me or does anyone else think they are copying intel?

i3-xxxx

i5-xxxx

i7-xxxx

personaly intel makes my head spin with the numbers they have but if they keep the number scheme the same or something systematic and easily recogniseable then i dont mind it

Alright... So I just look at which ever one costs the most and buy that one?... how is that different than any other product line ;)

Personally I couldn't care less what they call it. If they are making a larger difference between APU and GPU and Mobile naming schemes then I'm all for that.

I think for the number, they should have used the year, instead of R9, use R13. If the next generation releases in 2015 use R15.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
