So I'm a little confused. I watched the recent video Linus put up about this processor and I get that it's completely overkill and very expensive. That being said, it is compatible with x99. Hypothetically would it be better at gaming than a 5820k or even a 5960x. I don't care about rendering, I know that's what the Xeon is for. Is it just barely better at gaming and not worth $4000 more?

no it would not

games cannot use that many cores, they usually use only 8 or less

so a higher speed CPU like a 4790k would perform better

Not gaming or even rendering, if Intel release a i7 processor with 16 Cores, it would beat the E5 2699 v3. Xeons have their focus on servers, that's why the they don't really overclock, and have lower frequency.

No for the same reason the FX is bad for gaming, many cores but slower (except the Xeon loses it in clock speed instead of IPC).

The 18 core beast that Linus showed would play games very well, but I think even an overclocked i7 4790K would do better in gaming, with a single video card at least, 3 or 4 way SLI might be more demanding on the cpu. There are dimishing returns with each additionnal core for gaming, just like adding more gpus in SLI/Xfire.

For games to advantage from that 18 core Xeon, then it must take use of all those cores. Most current games just run on 4, that's why a Core i5 is the sweet spot for a gaming build. Core i7 with HT adds some benefits over the Core i5, where you have 4 dedicated cores for gaming and the extra 4 for something else. Maybe one day a game will take advantage of 18 cores, but today is not the day.
