AMD 4 or 6 Core, no hyperthreading, and a graphics card that supports OpenCL.

As for why, it's cheaper and fits the budget so you can have a higher performing graphics card like an 7870 or 660 ti.

Depends on what kind of video editing software he uses. If he's using Premiere/AE CS5/5.5/6/CC he'll need an nvidia card as they are the only ones that are fully supported at this moment. Otherwise an AMD card has better compute performance and would be the better choice.

For $1,000 if he's not doing a lot of editing an FX6300 and a GTX 760 would be a good combo and with all other components you should be at around $1,000.

I'm still thinking a 660 ti is $250 and didn't even take into consideration the 700 series.

Before a few rebates this is just under $900.

It doesn't seem to many people take into consideration that you will probably have to pay taxes on some of these purchases. This build leaves you room to pay those sale taxes.

With that in mind Here is a solid build that will be good at both tasks. If your friend is willing to spend a little over $1,000, I would advise him to do so and get an FX 8350 as it is the best blend of gaming and multitasking performance for the price.

wouldn't the build I suggested give him the best performance for near enough the same money.......it's really up to the one buying the parts but the 7970 and 8350 are the top end of amd....all in all that bulld would probably get a bit more fps than mine. I forgot to add an HDD so just add $80 ontop or something for the hdd your friend wants..... my total price was like $1500.....the UK and it's freaking tax :( I.could've got two 7970s and the rest of my building in America......probably....

You should go with an Amd cpus.

I really recommend going with the Asus m5a97 Evo R2.0 if you're planning to overclock, it's the best 970 board you can find.

Anyway If you're going with another mobo you should really avoid the Msi 970A-G46 if you want to overclock, just take a look on others forums/sites, it's really a bad choice for overclock.

I came up with this: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1hOrj

$24.00 over budget. I used some of WoodenMarkers parts as they were good.

This is what you'd have to get for $1000, I fit in an h60 which should be easily able to push the 8320 to 4.5 quietly and easily.  Good 660ti, great mobo I personally have the same mobo and case. Great psu performance wise with voltage regulation, semi modular. Loving the case. If you want your pc to look and feel decent get a good case. If you like the look of the phantom and great cable management get the phantom if you wanna throw it under your desk and for it too be quiet look for a fractal design R4. Don't cheap out on your case if your budget is $1000.  This is a very very balanced build.

dude the best 970 board you can buy is the Gigabyte 970a-ud3 but the ud3 is $10-20 more.

if you crossfired on that mobo it would explode. the xfx 7950 core ed. has the worst performance cooling solution out of any of the 7950's.  save the money and get a 660ti or 760 if you want to go with amd maybe a 7870 or a 7870 xt/tahiti le. that mobo is way to underpowered for a $1000 dollar system. if your gonna go with a 970 board go with the asus m5a97 non le or a gigabyte 970 ud3. spend the extra money on a decent mobo

Lol no you picked windows 8 common man lol

a 7970 is not worth the extra $100 over the 7950 if you have a budget of $1000.

A slightly better mobo should give marginal performance boosts if any. The mobo works and isn't terrible. Not everyone needs a Maximus.

As for the xfx 7950, it may not have the best cooler, but it's not like it's not still a powerful card. It could probably still be overclocked a bit with the cooler.

you shouldnt crossfire on a 970 board the second pci lane doesnt have enough bandwith (2.0 x4 is like CFing using a 3.0 x2 slot) to give you your money's worth. I didnt say you needed a maximus i gave 2 suggestions for $10-20 more that is literally the cheapest 970 board. that card is just not a good choice right now. Its more expensive than these two cards which have far better cooling
