Why do YOU fold/mine.

Find it interesting why people invest large sums of money in these things. Personal projects? Fun? Money?

I lost my grandma to cancer in 2013, so when I fold I always go for Cancer related WUs

1) The competitive part of me.

2) It goes to a good cause (F@H)

3) Does hardware at idle do any good? No, so use it to it's potential.

i currently have two servers sitting mostly idle (they need to be on for reasons, but they arent doing all that much)

 

i'd fold if the both of them would actually be capable of folding faster than one WU each week -.-

My aunt currently has Leukemia, and also one of my friends has some other form of cancer. And if no one is using my school citrix servers, I always am. :P

Well you do it to help others basically.. you offer a service, in terms of processing capability, for free to people who can't pay for large supercomputers.

I don't do it personally, but I thought that was the gist of it.

I think it helps. It also helps with my state of mind on the status of their health thinking there is something that I can do to help.

Yes it is. And yes it does!

 

For instance, take a look at this (it isn't F@H, but it is Boinc): https://cepdb.molecularspace.org/

 

It's a project that I participate, aiming to develop better solar cells. Anyone can make a free account there and have access to the entire database of compounds: you can see many of their properties were already estimated, so if you were looking for a molecule with specific numbers, even if it wasn't specifically for solar cell creation, you could just search there. Does the project ACTUALLY create solar cells? No. But at least it tell researches which substances they should spent resources on, and which ones won't produce results, thus helping the researchers.

Been doing boink now instead of folding, few people seem to boink compared to f@h. I love astronomy and Einstein @home lets me look for pulsars and gravity waves, cool stuff. Also from my personal experience no one wants to talk to you about physics untill you have a crap ton of math below your belt. So its hard to get doctor's to be honest.

Reason being, boinc requires you to actively engage in the research. You have multiple options of projects (not forced to chose any particular one), you have to manually add one that you like, you can customize the client to do pretty much anything you want (except coffee), you can abort / request new WUs whenever you want, you have to register an account... basically, you are in charge, and you have to think about it. With F@H, you just install the software and never worry about it anymore, there's no need for engagement. No need to dedicate a bit of time on it.

i didnt feel like it was really any harder than F@H. It does give you a ton of options, even protein folding is on there, prime numbers, algebraic properties, its a really good collection on projects. I wish i would have got into it sooner. I would like a follow up or email if they do find something and i had helped just the smallest bit,would be. Nice to know.

You aren't exactly "saving power" since you're spending more on electricity instead of oil/gas :/

 

I fold because I like to have my hardware being used, so I can't call my PC a "waste"

I don't want my room particularly warm, meaning that since my computer provides enough eat, we can heat the other rooms in the house (that require heating) much more effectively. Our radiators are pretty much on or off - full heating or no heating - so it makes quite a difference.
