Why reuse GPUs?

Go to solution Solved by CapricaBuccaneers,

It's not specific to any one manufacturer.

In it's most simple form the manufacturer is trying to sell existing inventory.

AMD have been struggling to sell cards, and by discontinuing the 2xx series and rebadging it 3xx they're killing two birds with one stone:

- 'new' product releases generally expect to drum up new sales

- these new sales are actually using up old stock first

Is it a little cynical? Maybe, rebadged cards tend to support newer APIs and the like, offering slightly better value for money and longevity. You should expect the cards to be at a similar price point to their 'predecessors'. It's something that has become the norm in modern manufacturing, for better or worse.

They're riding the actual new release of the 390/x to build some momentum for sales across the board.

I know AMD is struggling in both the GPU and CPU department, but why come out with an entirely new line of GPUs, only one of which (390/x) is actually new? Why just rebrand everything else and try selling it again? Why not make the 390 into a 300/x instead and stahp rebranding GPUs to make them look new.

Not trying to start wars or butthurt people, just honestly doesn't make sense to rebrand rebranded GPUs.

Because making the same thing is cheaper, no need for production lines, no need for design. So they pull down top of the line lower and release new top of the line cards.

I have no problem with reusing their old GPU.

If the End product is performing as well as they say, it shouldn't really matter.

GTX 770 was a re badged and it is still pretty damn powerful.

Werent some of the 200 series rebrands of the 7000 series ? So the cards are basically 2 generations old...

AMD please don't die , i don't want my GTX x80 to be 1500$ because there is no competition...

OP all I have to say is this ...

Commercialism. Is it really good for everyone? No. Is it about companies making money and nothing more?  Yes.  AMD thinks this is the move they need to do right now to make money or is the best way they can make money and nothing more.

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

Yeah, but they're not ACTUALLY making money on it. The people that buy the 340-380x are only doing so because its replaced the 200 series, they're not buying it because its better, they're buying it because its slightly newer. All the people that want a 200 series cards won't buy one, because the 300 series is there. There's not actually any money being made off that. They're just going to be getting the same trickle of cash they were already getting. The only new money comes from 390/x.

If the performance is good for the price and no features are missing, why should I care if it's a rebrand or not ?

There are quite a few new gpu's ...

It doesn't make sense though.

The people that buy 2xx cards will buy the (hopefully) equivalently priced 3xx cards instead because they're slightly newer and nothing else.

All the sales from 2xx will shift to 3xx, no new money, at least not a significant amount.

Well some people will sell their old cards and buy new cards, I think the key feature will be on the software side

Performance would be the same for a higher price.

Why would the price go up ? It usually is lower since the rebranded card is lower in the hierarchy.

Still doesn't make sense, then the majority would roll back to the 2xx series until one series becomes cheaper.

I hope this example makes sense :D  :D

Of course most expensive cards are on the right and the more to the left you go the cheaper you get.
