What's better for folding?

Is more cores for CPU better for folding or is it better to get more GPU power? I've seen builds made for folding that consists of xeon processors but I would think it would be better to go for more GPU processing power. Can anyone clear this up for me?

MOAR GPU BISH!

 

Disclaimer: In my current rig I have a crappy GT 740m but I have a nice i7 and the i7 gets WUs finished faster. BUT the WUs for the CPU are less demanding so yeah I would recommend you get a better GPU.

24 fps for that "cinematic" feel


After a couple weeks of behavioral sciences at my school I can easily conclude my parents need to grow up.

More high-end GPU power. Because of how the quick return bonus works, a single high end GPU will out perform multiple low end ones. For a dedicated folding rig you would ideally have a low end pentium or i3 paired with two R9 290Xs or GTX 970s. Its a nice sweet spot in performance vs cost.

Previously with BIGADV projects, a multi CPU setup was the way to go. Now that that project has ended, GPU's are the power house.

I am only folding on GPU. With my CPU (4690k) i get up to 6-10k, with my GPU (R9 270x) i get 70-90k per day. CPU creates much more noise and heat, uses a lot of power, seems a bit wasteful for me.

For Folding (Boinc is a completely different story..), you need a CPU that has -at least- X cores, where "X" is the number of GPUs installed. But beyond that, any extra cores you have are relatively "useless", from a PPD perspective. Before investing more on the CPU, make sure you are investing in high-end GPUs, such as the Gtx 970 or R9 290(x).

with driver version 14.9 you will get more ppd :)

idk about amd being better, they code different projects to take advantage of hardware you have. When mining was the rage this was more true, amd was a head. Folding idk.
