I went from not knowing anything about computers to helping my friend build a computer by being open minded and researching. That PCMR guy is just a semi-knowledgeable rich ignorant bastard.

A hyperthreaded "core" is weaker than a physical core, this is easily verifiable on an i3 vs i5 comparison of 4 threads vs 4 physical cores, so I'm assuming you're right. However marketing is a powerful force: I've seen people who sell an 8350 by saying it's a 32ghz processor (4ghz times 8 cores) and was bitter about anyone correcting his sale item.
