It will bottleneck it, and GTA loves its cores

What fps do you think it will play and on what settings? even if it's playable at 1080p I'm happy! I want to build a new pc but in the meantime I could use the old pc.

Maybe medium-high settings. The Q6600 will never allow the 970 to get to its full potential

Hello! How do you guys think an Intel Q6600 will handle a GTX 970? I have an old PC doing nothing and it has an Q6600, I wanted to buy a new GPU so I can play GTA5 for PC.

i hope you're kidding right? i had a Q6600 running at 3.6ghz and it was limiting the performance of an HD7950 GPU already...which is much weaker than a GTX 970...i think you're looking at 15-20 FPS with such an old CPU man...unless you plan to upgrade to an haswell i5 pretty soon you really shouldnt put a 350$ GPU in that machine...something like an R9 270 would be much more appropriate!

GTA V is a core whore, unless that CPU is hyperthreaded (Q6600 is not) then it will bottleneck any midrange GPU for sure.

it's not, ive ran some benchmarking yesterday with maximum settings but at 800X600 resolution to take the GPU out of the equation and see what kind of performance difference HT makes in that game, here are the result (hardware: core i7-4770K @4.2ghz and GTX 780 1280mhz core(GPU irrelevant, never got above 65% usage all the way through)):

HT ON:

2015-04-28 20:45:21 - GTA5

Frames: 7276 - Time: 43391ms -

Avg: 167.685 - Min: 96 - Max: 257

HT OFF:

2015-04-28 20:49:20 - GTA5

Frames: 7543 - Time: 44343ms -

Avg: 170.106 - Min: 98 - Max: 257

As you can see...HT with GTA V actualy has a small negative impact. (very small...margin of error...IMHO i think it just won't change anything at all)

there are some games that do benefit slightly from hyper-threading on a quad-core chip, but GTA V is clearly not one of them.

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |
| GPU: MSI RTX 3080Ti Ventus 3X OC  RAM: 32GB T-Force Delta RGB 3066mhz |
| Displays: Acer Predator XB270HU 1440p Gsync 144hz IPS Gaming monitor | Oculus Quest 3 VR

@i_build_nanosuits

it seems the perfect GPU to pair with may be the GTX750Ti

if not for the awful prices here in Singapore

and yes GTA 5 just love all the cores

but then Slick tested the Q6600 vs the i7 5960X which was nerf to 2.4GHz and running 4 cores

might be slower at stock and cause stutters

but if done right a good Q6600 will be good for 1080P if paired with a mid range GPU

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Ok, I know that. But do you think it's playable?

Hell no, get an i5, 4690K preferably.

I know, I'm getting that cpu, but before I have a computer with an 4690K, I wanna play GTA PC on my father's old. (It's around 8 years old btw)

It'll work, and will be somewhat playable. It will stutter and hitch when the Q6600 inevitably hiccups. Even with my QX9650 I had a hefty bottleneck when paired with my 970.

No one can really predict your frame rate accurately unfortunately.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.
