TAG Heuer's Android smartwatch will cost you $1,400

tag-heuer-android-wear-2.jpg

So people of the internet, you kept saying how spending a lot of a smartwatch with no prestige didn't make any sense - here is a Smartwatch that has plenty of prestige behind it. So for 1,400 will you put your money where your mouths were and get this instead?

Probably not. 1,400 is encroaching "entry" level luxury watch status, but with your 1,400 you also get FOURTY hours of battery life. Thats right. 40. Not shabby at all eh?

Begs the question, how smart will this watch be? Or will it employ a mechanical front with digital screen in the back, so your watch stays as a watch for a lot longer? Who knows. Interesting either way. Curious to see which design they go with. I'm hoping its the Carrera casing, as shown below, since thats a great looking one.

The first true premium smartwatch is coming later this year from TAG Heuer. That’s right, Apple, plating a calculator watch in gold doesn’t make it premium – at least in my book. The watch, as announced in March, will be made in partnership with Intel and Google, yet “reflect the TAG Heuer heritage of Swiss design and quality.” So it’s a Swiss-made Android Wear device, powered by an Intel processor, and outfitted with what we can only imagine will be a high price tag for a smartwatch.

According to a report out of Bloomberg, that “high” price will likely end up right around $1,400 and reportedly be ready for launch in October or November of this year. That matches up to TAG’s announcement of a 2015 worldwide distribution.

Aside from the pricing news, we may also now know another important feature of this yet-to-be-seen TAG smartwatch, and that’s battery life. Jean-Claude Biver, TAG Heuer’s CEO, said during a Hublot boutique opening that his smartwatch will last about 40 hours on a single charge. That would top all other smartwatches in the Android Wear category, assuming it can deliver on that. Most Android Wear devices are good for a day with pretty heavy usage, but can often bleed into a second day. At 40 hours, we are getting close to two full days.

It does has more of a "Ha ha ha, James bring another Crystal bottle and some glasses to the top of my yatch please!" vibe to it as opposed to "Well guys we made a lot of money off this IT consulting firm, oh cool a geeky watch!" kind of vibe competing products have.

I'd personally prefer the Apple Watch but each to their own... Also, I'm talking about either the Sport or a cheaper normal one. So prices for that would be around $400-$600 which is somewhat acceptable if not cheap.

With zero info released about the TAG Heuer watch, I really can't say anything about it, but I know that this will not work with iOS if it will be running Android Wear.

IMHO, I don't see the market...The majority of luxury watch audience is middle aged, wealthy businessmen/women. They are likely to own an iPhone anyways, and this will never work as seamlessly as the Apple Watch does, they are, after all, not Apple.

Meh. I'd rather put that money towards a MontBlanc.

I do love the attitude of the CEO though. He's quoted as saying “I hope they sell millions and millions and millions of them. The more they sell the more a few people will want something different and come to TAG Heuer.” when he was asked what he thought about the competition coming from Cupertino. He knows his market.

I disagree. In China, yes you're right. There's a certain mark of quality, because for the longest time it was hard to get an Apple device there.

But I know a lot of people in business running Android devices. They're rapidly gaining traction.

Yes, in China, Apple is the thing to buy for status. But even elsewhere, the iPhone is generally more popular with older people. I do have to agree that a TAG Heuer watch is more attractive to a wealthy business person than a flash Apple Watch.

I know I'd rather get a TAG but 95% of that is because the TAG has a far more iconic design, something that I find very appealing. Either the Carrera or Monaco casings would be almost Day 1 purchases for me, because they carry a design that I love.

If Apple had licensed a design like that, they'd probably have had even more success. Smartwatches that look like watches and not like pieces of tech are the most important thing, and TAG will probably be the first to market with a smartwatch that is recognizable because it has the same design as its analog counterpart.

Still better value than a competing apple watch. There, I said it.

Personally I'd take an omega seamaster over any other watch out there, even something like this, but that's my preference for traditional timepieces. That being said, if they kept it with analogue workings, I'd definitely take a long hard look at this.

My G Watch might be ugly as sin, but at least it was only $160CAD and won't get me mugged by a crackhead.

Haha, valid argument. You could always get yourself security if you like though.
