No display after changing GPU

Go to solution Solved by SgtLuke,

Update: went to bring back the second DOA EVGA 980. Exchanged for a Gigabyte 980. Just installed, works absolutely smooth from the first second on...

Conclusion: when you have as much luck in love and life as I do, you can obviously get two DOA GPU in a row! :-)

Sucks, but happens. Thanks to everyone who tried to help me out.

Weird. Assuming that everything is connected correctly, which I presume it is, I can't think of any other possible reasons for it not working. The card is obviously powering on correctly and identifying itself to the UEFI and to Windows, so the only reason that I can come up with for it not displaying the correct signal is that the card is broken I'm afraid, though it is incredibly unlikely for you to have got two DOA cards in a row (unless there's something weird with your system that's killing the cards somehow).

You could try contacting EVGA support to see whether they can suggest anything, but otherwise I'm afraid you might have another dead card to deal with.

Indeed it is totally weird. Can you give me an idea what could kill these cards in my system? I'm also having a hard time believing to have 2 DOA cards with the exakt same failure in a row...

Right now I'm again sitting on my PC, I bled the system and reinstalled the R9 290 and everything is running totally smooth.

Edit: I additionally contacted EVGA support now, thank you for this hint.

The only possible cause that I can come up with would be that your power supply is causing issues, but that's quite unlikely and would probably also have caused issues with your old card.

It's unlikely for your reason and as stated before: it's a Corsair AX760, not exactly what you call the low-cost option.  ;)

I just ran my system through some high load tests: it's as rock stable and "water cool" as it's ever been (no overclocking!). As much as I can't believe to have two DOA in a row, I have to agree with you: As every other component is running just fine it must be another faulty GPU card.

Well might be worth a shot but as far as i understand, you can get the pc working if you plug the swift in a port of the iGPU while the 980 is plugged in and ready to go.

Ever tried to change the cable from the iGPU to the 980 while the pc is turned on and working?

Normally windows 7 and 8 switch automaticly to the right screen when you plug it in somewhere else.

edit: turn up the sound when you do this, you should hear the connected and disconnected noises like you hear with a usb thing.

edit 2: maybe they (who-ever swapped the gpu) made a mistake and gave you accidentaly the same gpu back? Might explain it all :D

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

Yes, that's correct. I can boot the system trouble-free if I choose to run on the iGPU (onboard graphics). There are no error messages or mainboard beeps indicating that anything is wrong. If I choose to run on iGPU, there's no signal as well on the GTX980 (tested with several monitors).

The reseller did indeed give me a new card, 100% sure (plastic wrapped, protection sheets on the GPU, ...), but good thought

I think he's being pretty calm :P

......... I don't even need to bother because SgtLuke answered back to that stupid comment for you. I'd also like to point out that he actually liked my comment so clearly your wrong and just being a passive aggressive dick.

Yes, pretty calm as I'm sitting in front of my no-longer-working PC, wonder why the f*** i have no display... ;-)

If even you experts in here don't have any ideas, I'll reinstall my R9 290 for now and return the $800 GTX980 tomorrow. For the second time.

Word of advice, shut up. Stop trying to delegate everything like its your glory. Your being passive aggressive towards others/parroting what people you agree with are saying and seeking approval from the group opinion. If you have nothing constructive to say or suggest, shut up. Thanks.

Had the same issue with my R9 280x. The problem was that my BIOS needed an update. Removed the card, plugged DVI directly into board, booted up with Intel HD Graphics, updated BIOS, put card back in. Then, the card was working. TRIPLE, TRIPLE check that you are on the latest BIOS version. Also, make sure the the current BIOS you have matches with your board, because it is possible to flash BIOS from a very similar board that can cause the issues you describe.

Thank you for this hint. I did even try different BIOS update versions (of course matching with my MB), didn't change anything.

Glad to see that it wasn't anything more than a faulty card. You're lucky you got a second DOA!

Thanks! Thus you call having to bleed and refill a custom watercooling loop 18 times "lucky"? ;-)

By the way: no reaction/answer from EVGA Europe customer service...

Didn't know you had to do that. Shame. Atleast you got your card working.

I dont think he has a clue at all about anything he talks about let alone you being lucky. Glad it worked out.
