SSD, better PSU than the Corsair CX750M, not a fan of the MSI boards as their BIOS flashing utility is a load of crap and has been for a while (high chance of bricking boards)

Cheaper case but I'd much rather have a large SSD than a better case, better cooler etc

Well the most intensive program I see there is photoshop, and that anyway after 2/4 cores really has diminishing returns. It likes clock speed, so if you clock the i5 to 4.2+ it should fly. However if you do want an i7;

About $40 over budget but you could drop to a 120GB SSD to get that closer to the $1k mark. However, spending $1000 you NEED an SSD, I wouldn't even consider a system like this without one.

Yes, for editing the 4790k is much better.

Considering you want to upgrade rather soon to a new gpu, i tossed in a mid-range gpu that can at least game @ 1440P with some confidence while you wait.

This though, according to what you want, is a far better build that has been posted so far xD EDIT- Some people while i was making this finally posted some good workstation builds and read your whole OP.

You've got $100 left over, and can then put that towards a better card in a few months after you've saved some more. You could grab a 980, 390X if you're willing to wait a little longer, or any of the higher end cards.

Yes, for rendering video a 4790k is much faster. For photos, not so much due to the nature of which Photoshop uses cores, seems to be a common misconception :( Asrock boards are meh but it'll work, that SSD has gimped NAND so won't reached advertised speeds, and the case doesn't even have front or back loading HDD slots!

The case isn't meant for them to buy. It's a place holder for them to choose something else. Choosing a case is a very personal thing. Probably should have said that though with the post.

I love asrock boards, never had issues with them, and they are great at a great value with that one.

And the 4790k was still suggested over tha 4690K because as the OP stated, He is going to be upgrading the gpu rather soon, and was ok with it being gimped for higher end gear.

The ssd isn't as fast, that's right, but kingston still holds their products to a fairly high quality, so it's still decades faster than a standard drive. And for that price, there isn't really many others that compete with it in terms of Storage space. And even with the swap from synch. to as. nand in some of their v300s it still performs well. The Tek syndicated covered briefly that the product still performs pretty damn well, but because of them sending review batches with synch. nand and then shipping consumer versions w/o it, they wouldn't be purchasing it because of the bait-and-switch and ethics. So, sure, the ssd has asynchronous nand, but its still a good ssd for that price. xD.
