so here is my current pc as it stands. Things that are marked as $0 were gifts. Things that are marked as $0 and purchased are parts from my old pre build, and the $850 cpu is also a part from the pre built and i paid 850 for the pre built.

 

So im trying to figure out what upgrade i should do to my pc next. I dont know if i should get a new psu and a second 280x, a brand new gpu, or what i should do?

 

so here is also a picture of my pc internals (i actually have a 280x in there but its basically the same.

i dont really have much of a budget in mind right now, as i am just planning upgrades for the future, however i will not be spending crazy ammounts of money when i do, so keep that in mind.

I would recommend both a new Motherboard/CPU or bigger SSD.  I have a 128gb SSD and it is approaching its max capacity very soon and I have not put very much on it.  I would recommend maybe a 500gb SSD to put other things on plus it is SUPER nice to have games/applications other than OS things on there.  As for a new CPU I would say get an unlocked CPU that allows for overclocking which may result in needing to get a new CPU cooler depending on what CPU you get but other than that there is not much more you need to upgrade as of right now but I mean in a couple years probably a new graphics card!

i dont think i really need those things, they would be more expensive than a new gpu and have lower performance gains. if any because i would get a i5 and z97 board, and lose 4 threads which would suck in rendering. i could get a 970 for the same price

again its a cpu that has 4 cores and 8 threads on haswell. its basically the same as the xeon e3 1230.

 

i would have to pay $400-$500 for a cpu that is the same, but with a slightly higher clock speed.

i would still likely have to pay $100+ for, if im lucky, 1ghz, performance that may help in gaes and rendering, but no more that 20%

yeah that was one of my ideas. i would need a new psu

 

they are relitivly expensive in canada, and still pricey used

 

plus new psu and i may have a neacular reactor in a box if i do

i could also use a new set of speakers, and if i get a dual gpu it would be op for 1080p then i would have to spend more on a 1440p or 4k monitor

Does your build have any real limitations?

You're running a 60hz 1080p monitor. I can't see the video card really having a hard time pushing that.
As for the CPU, I'd leave that too. It's already pretty good. Sure you could OC it if you got a K series processor...but do you really need to? I had a 2700k and I never overclocked it.

I sold it a month ago, and honestly could still run it perfectly fine. So you 4770 should be more than capable.

Usually I'd say upgrade to a larger SSD since they generally travel build to build. But your next build might as well feature a m.2 SSD.

Honestly, I'd maybe maybe throw in another 280x if you can find one for a killer deal.
Do you really need to upgrade though? I have a feeling you just want a new toy.

I'd say maybe a peripheral. New mouse, sweet set of speakers or something.

TL;DR

If it was me, I'd just get a jar. Put the upgrade money you have in it, and let it multiply (maybe cover it up so it doesn't get shy).

Then get a new motherboard and CPU when Skylake come out. Throw an m.2 SSD on there (they'll be cheaper), and a new video card (Pascal or AMD's combatant).

I can't see anything that would greatly benefit you.

The riser  was custom built by me so that i can slide mt keyboard up and under it so that i have room for homework.

Ikea desk! It sort of looks like you're out of room for larger monitors so I wouldn't worry about that too much.

Just stick with the tower you have now and save up for Pascal.

The best perfomance-increasing option right now would be get a second 280/280X (either can be CF'd with each other), and a new PSU, 750W for good headroom measures.

Better processor or MOBO would be what I would do. You could also get a better PSU and an SSD for a similar price.

Worst case is that both cards will run at the speed of the slowest card (280) but it's not hard at all to get both cards running at stock 280X speeds.
