I cannot decide whether to get a 980 or SLI 970s. I want to be able to push the Acer XB270HU.

I am having a tough time deciding considering that DX12 is right around the corner (although it will be a while for games to support it).

What do you guys think would be the best route to go? Or would you do something totally different?

Everyone will reccomend dual 970's, but I think that it's worth it to live at 40 fps on 1440p for awhile until you can get a second and reallllly max your games out.

I've currently go a MSI GTX 970 Gaming http://www.amazon.com/MSI-GTX-970-4G-Graphics/dp/B00NN0GEXQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1429758870&sr=1-1&keywords=msi+970 with another one on the way and am very satisfied even with a single card's performance.

how about single 290x.. (freesync?)

The Acer XB270HU is a G-Sync monitor...

I'd recommend a single 980 or waiting for a Titan X / 980ti if that ever becomes a thing. SLI 970's will run it but not as well as SLI 980's.

I always recommend getting the most powerful card you can even when running SLI because of those games with broken multi-gpu implementations.

Depends how much you want to spend. I dont have 1000$+ for a video cards so i took gtx 970 sli cuz it looks like one of the best price/performance ratio card. Another alternative would be 2x 290x. But if you have money then buy those overpriced gtx 980 sli or titan x sli.

A single 980 runs games well above 40 FPS at 1440p.

But at ultra?

Not every game, AC:U is a notable exception.  Crysis 3 may not do it on Very High everything as well I haven't tried it.  Dragon Age Inquisition needs some slight reducing as well.

The few I have tried:

BF4

Lichdom Battlemage

Far Cry 4

Evolve

Advanced Warfare

All of those ran maxed out on one 980 at 60+ FPS at 1440p.  Most other games aren't nearly as demanding.
