If I would do a SLI with 2 GTX970 and used more than 7 gb of ram, will the performance drop again? Did anyone do a test on this?

what? i hope you're not asking if SLI doubles VRAM, becuase of so, NO. It's rumoured DX12 will do that, but certainly not OpenGL, D3D, DX 11 and less etc.

SLI doesn't double vram man. Although I dearly wished it did.

Even then, I haven't seen most AAA titles go over 3.5GB. I haven't watched all the reviews so I'm not too sure on that. But I'm sure that there will be one or two games that overshoots the 3.5GB. Other than that, it usually stays below, if not close to 3.5.

Unfortunately no, you will still have that 3.5 gb of v-ram buffer

The ram combines and runs parallel on each card, not combined

DX12 might bring some changes though

It may become 7GB after DX12 comes around and the creases get ironed out, but until that happens you're going to be stuck with 3.5GB. For anything up to 1440p, that's still a ridiculously kickass gaming setup, but you'll want more for 4K.
