Stock i5 4690k with h100i very high temp

65c idle not doing anything. Don't even wanna try playing games / stress testing it.

What went wrong? I have a corsair h100i, Intel stock cooler is even cooler at 45c idle

I scraped off the leftover Intel thermal grease and put on my h100i without any thermal paste. But still thermal paste or not 65c is not normal

Does it really make that big of temperature difference? I thought i could use my h100i without it since there's water in it.

You didn't get scammed. You need thermal paste. The CPU heatspreader isn't completely flat so you need thermal paste to make sure everything is making contact.

Let me explain the function of thermal paste.

It is used to make good contact between the cpu and the cpu block of the H100i

Air is an isolator, you can't see it but the biggest part of the cpu doesn't touch your H100i because there is a tiny tiny air layer, and that ruins EVERYTHING.

With thermal paste you fill up the air gaps and the paste will make it able for the heat to go from the cpu to the H100i

The water in the H100i takes the heat from the cpu block to the rad. But when the cpu block doesn't get any heat from the cpu, it doesn't work properly.

edit: to give you an example, hold your 2 hands together, whatever you do, you will never touch your hands together completely, there will always be air between parts of you hand, if you hold a pillow between it, you hands do make complete contact with each other thanks to the pillow. The pillow is what the thermal paste does for your cpu and H100i

I really didn't think thermal paste would make that huge of a difference, air cooler yes but I thought waterblock was different

Air cooler or water cooler still needs to make contact with the CPU's heat spreader. Apply thermal paste and you'll see how much of a big difference it is.

Its still a piece of copper making contact with the CPU.

troll alert.

Yesterday you were asking about which thermal paste you should buy and what method you should use to apply. People told you what you could get and what method to apply.

This morning you said you installed the H100i with "stock intel  thermal paste". people told you to get new thermal paste, clean of the old one and apply.

Now you tell us that you did it without thermal paste?

Sorry, I don't believe anyone is this stupid.
