Phys X on CPU?

Go to solution Solved by Ostwind,

You can still put PhysX on the CPU.

I went to check after I posted, I do remember hearing about Nvidia disabling CPU PhysX but maybe they reversed the decision. It has been some time but regardless the performance hit for CPU PhysX is massive and running it on the CPU should be avoided.

Is it better to run phys X on the CPU or GPU?

physx is so pointless in most games other than Metro: LL that I would say just straight up don't run it.

+1, its pretty pointless I have to be honest!

I would argue against that - Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel. PhysX makes a difference there.

Metro LL has a very subtle implementation of PhysX, while it's most definitely not necessary it is more immersive.

@OP I do believe that Nvidia disabled CPU PhysX awhile ago as pretty much no CPU could handle it without utterly destroying your game performance. If you have an SLI setup it's best to just leave the setting to auto.

That difference is worth it, it looks freaking awesome.

You cra, there is a lot of games the have really really nice physx first and foremost bordelands. That's really great effects that improve the game.

You don't even have a nvidia card. You don't know how good it is. Biased opinion much? lol

I run two NVIDIA cards. I checked my control panel(with up-to-date drivers) and PhysX is still usable on the CPU.

It was utter poop on borderlands 2. I have no clue how it improved (according to you guys) so drastically in a filler game.

if you have an nvidia gpu, run it on your gpu

otherwise don't run it at all. barely any games benefit from it.

oh yeah really convincing and good looking effects there...

The cloth tearing takes nearly half a second to actually happen when I shoot it (not to mention it looks like the cloth has a 5 frame animation...), the acid looks like garbage and so does the water. I don't get the big deal here.

It's the style of the game. I don't think you're objectively ripping on PhysX when that use of it(in the video) was dependent on the game. Not all uses of PhysX are equal.

What about Batman Arkham City, Arkham Asylum, or Arkham Origins?

wow the only games that actually use physx

name 3 more that aren't completely physx centric that you'd still want to keep physx on for.

it's OK at best, but I think that LL still has the best looking effects that make it actually worth the processing power.

How are the games I mentioned PhysX centric exactly? They're still enjoyable without PhysX.

In case you're wondering, here are some more games that utilize PhysX: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_games_with_hardware-accelerated_PhysX_support

Black flag and hawken also have some of the more impressive effects. I think he just wants to hate on physx because it's the cool thing to do in his mind.

No, physx is just dead

nvidia made it proprietary just like they do with all of their practices and physx just straight up died.

it used to be a selling point and it is not anymore. gamestream is also a joke, gsync is being competed with by freesync, and the only reasonably 'cool' feature is shadowplay, but most people who intend on streaming already have a strong enough processor.

i just genuinely think physx is/was and will always be a bad innovation.
