Phys X on CPU?

Go to solution Solved by Ostwind,

You can still put PhysX on the CPU.

I went to check after I posted, I do remember hearing about Nvidia disabling CPU PhysX but maybe they reversed the decision. It has been some time but regardless the performance hit for CPU PhysX is massive and running it on the CPU should be avoided.

No, physx is just dead

nvidia made it proprietary just like they do with all of their practices and physx just straight up died.

I don't disagree with you there. NVIDIA made bad decisions in regards to PhysX and as a result, it is not popular in games. It's also possible that they bricked it on CPUs to make people buy NVIDIA cards.

it used to be a selling point and it is not anymore. gamestream is also a joke, gsync is being competed with by freesync, and the only reasonably 'cool' feature is shadowplay, but most people who intend on streaming already have a strong enough processor.

i just genuinely think physx is/was and will always be a bad innovation.

There is truth to what you are saying, but it's still awesome when implemented in games correctly. But again like most of the people who can't use it you refuse to believe there is any merit to it existing.

don't get me wrong, it *was* smart, and could have gone places, but not only did it not get enough support (cough cough, the same thing happened to AMD, but with Mantle and Tress-FX), it wasn't open source, and if you wanted to use Phys-X as an AMD user you had to run it on your CPU which was horribly inefficient.

unfortunate.

it's just a selling point. it's a bonus to whatever game happens to support it, otherwise it's a relatively useless feature.

Tress-FX is actually open source.

Don't forget they disabled their cards working with AMD ones.

Tress-FX is actually open source.

i'm like 99%  sure mantle was/is open source as well, and i wasn't saying tress-fx wasn't, it just never really caught on haha.

it's just small niche stuff that makes for 'okay' selling points, but not every game studio will go out of their way to support those technologies.

maybe i'm crazy. i thought amd offered the ability to use mantle to nvidia at one point, maybe that's what i'm confusing

idk i haven't slept in a good while. my bad

That's not the same as being open source. If NVIDIA wants to use Mantle, they would need to contact AMD and let them know. It's not like Mozilla Firefox, LibreOffice, or OpenOffice where you have access to the source code whenever you want to use it.

right, i know that. my original thought was it was open source then i went to thinking amd offered nvidia but forgot to drop the open source idea

it's my lack of sleep lol.
