Poll: Subjective v. Objective for PC hardware benchmarks

Go to solution Solved by TheRetiredSlave,

The benchmark results themselves are purely objective and based on raw performance, because that's usually the only thing that the charts show.

That being said, interpretation of the benchmarks is an entirely different (and subjective) matter.

Do PC benchmarks produce subjective or objective results? I know this has been a topic of great debate for decades but we all have a solid understanding on sweet spot hardware or extreme hardware and what they'll allow you to do in your games.

What do you mean? Benchmarks are purely objective.

Objective = Something that is not influenced by personal feelings or preferences.

Example of objective things:

"1 + 1 = 2"

or

"Processor X gets a score of 12345 in benchmark Y"

It doesn't matter if you want 1 + 1 to be 3, the fact won't change. Therefore it is objective. It's the same with the benchmark score. It doesn't matter what your personal feelings about the processor is.

Subjective = Something based on your personal feelings or preferences.

Example of subjective things:

"I like the color red"

or

"I think this song sounds good"

You can't disprove those two statements by using facts, so therefore they are subjective.
