Hi,

I want to build a pc for a friend and he only wants to game on it.

Whats better the Athlon X4 860K or the Pentium G3258.

He wants to play GTA 5, BF4, Gmod, Portal,... on 1080P high
And the GPU is a GTX 960

Any suggestions are welcome! ;)

I3. Get an i3 for an entry level gaming rig. Tons of performance, reasonable cost, can play any game on the market, upgrade path to i5/i7.

That Athlon will fall apart.

G3258 with a 960 should run GTA nicely

in those games single core performance wont really matter and while the g3258 is great i compared mine with a an fx4300 (the athlon but with l3 cache) and the fx beat it in games like battlefield it had lower cpu usage and didnt bottleneck wheras the g3258 was at its limits, its only redeeming features is its upgrade path which WILL be needed, so effectively its a cpu if you plan to upgrade shortly after (which is what im doing, go figure).

op needs an i3 at the least, preferably a 4440 (4460 is a waste of money)

i was generalizing but in those cases, sweet! here in the uk an fx8 is half the price of an i5k

it goes like this in terms of modern gaming capabilities, so figure your budget OP and pick cheap compatible motherboards for each and compare the price (i highly suggest a good 6+2 power phase board and at least a 30$ aftermarket CPU cooler for the FX-6300 and FX-8320 making them more expensive)

Pentium G3258 ---> overall the weakest  in modern games.

Athlon 860K ---> SLow as hell too but at least it can play all the games without you having to fuck up with the game to get it to launch and then it's 30FPS constant instead of like the G3258 where it's 85FPS at times with drops in the 17FPS range and 2 second long stutters occuring every 8 seconds of gameplay...it's slow but it's constant and more even...therefore more enjoyable IMHO.

FX-6300 ---> this in most cases is slower than the core i3-4150, require a ton of power and heat dissipation to overclock and get reasonable performance, that's why it's lower.

Core i3-4150 ---> Now you get in the relm of the CPU's that can play any modern games relatively well, a good match for a mid-range card such as the R9 280 or GTX 960 for 1080p gaming for example, you'll get 45 to 60FPS out of such a setup in DEMANDING games)

FX-8320 ---> i rank this one above the Core i3 for performance, indeed that CPU once overclocked will run most MODERN AAA TITLES better than the core i3 chip IMHO, after testing both i've found the FX to have more ''guts'' in multi-threaded modern games BUT it fall short in single-threaded MMO's, RTS and RPG's if that's something you're into get an i3. The FX-8320 also consume A TON more power than the little core i3 and need a more epensive motherboard and good after market CPU cooling solution, this one once overclocked will heat up your room pretty fast...the socket is also dead and for a setup that would cost you as much i aint recommend this processor...i didnt like mine.)

Core i5-4440/4460: ---> THIS IS THE SWEETSPOT, that's where you want to be...this one can play any GPU maxed out at 1080p in most games and is a strong quad-core chip and that's what you want for gaming.

I could keep going but clearly we must have capped your budget at this point!

IMHO you should save for a core i3-4150 and a cheap H97 motherboard at the very least for your GTX 960

A core i5-4440 and a cheap H81 motherboard, and a single 8GB DDR3 RAM stick might be a good option as well.

Good luck!

EDIT: With the prices right now if you are in the US this is the king for performance/dollar in modern AAA titles IMHO:

So if i Pick a FX6300 and a aftermarket cooler wil that be good For doing multiple things at once i am more on to Intel anyway

nop nop mop

stick to I_build_nanosuits advice

get i5

if not the i3 is a good CPU too

No because you also need a decent motherboard for overclocking FX-6300 and with the aftermarket cooler it will end up costing about the same as the intel i5-4440 kit i've linked above ^^

If this one is too expensive then drop the CPU to a core i3, it will still be better all rounder than the FX-6300.

This is the cheapest way to overclock the FX-6300 and match the core i3 in (some) games:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor  ($94.88 @ NCIX US)

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler  ($28.98 @ NCIX US)

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P ATX AM3+ Motherboard  ($78.99 @ SuperBiiz)

Total: $202.85

Generated by PCPartPicker 2015-04-10 07:42 EDT-0400

That's it, you can't go with a cheaper motherboard than this one which is an 8 phase motherboard that is good for overclocking and you need at least one of these hyper 212 cooler in order to overclock...as you can see this kit is only 60$ cheaper than the i5 kit.

If he doesn't plan to upgrade anytime soon, I'd suggest the Athlon, since it's quad core, and dual cores will start struggling soon with AAA titles (Far Cry 4 for example). If he is upgrading soon (within about a year), get the Pentium, it'll be good for now, but when only having a dual core becomes an issue, he can get an i3 or i5 without swapping motherboards.

Hi,

I want to build a pc for a friend and he only wants to game on it.

Whats better the Athlon X4 860K or the Pentium G3258.

He wants to play GTA 5, BF4, Gmod, Portal,... on 1080P high

And the GPU is a GTX 960

Any suggestions are welcome! ;)

do you have a budget? if you want to play GTA5 then you need something more powerful than a G series or Athlon.

its worth saving an extra $100 can go a long way and go for an i5 or 6/8 core AMD rig as min,

got to love Asus components
