I was looking to build my first PC and I was wondering what size SSD would be good if i wanted to use it for my OS and some games and programs? Thank you :)

128-256GB.

Takes up about 20GB, maybe more.

But I would get a 128GB at least since you are installing games and programs.

A 60GB SSD is enough for the OS and even a few light programs.

But if you want to have also games on it, then I would use a 128-256 GB SSD.

You'll need space for your pagefile, hiberfil (can be disabled though) and program/appdata (could be moved with symlinking but I'd highly advise against that). I wouldn't go any lower than 120GB, especially now when they are so affordable.

I've a 60gig SSD. I've still 10.2 GB of space on it and there are around 30 programms installed on it. I don't see any problem why someone couldn't go with a 60GB SSD.

I am looking at the prices, and honestly anything bellow 120GB is REALLY not worth it. Not only the speed of the drive is much slower than the larger capacity, but dollar per GB, is not interesting.

Get 120GB or 256GB if you can afford it.

I highly recommend currently the Samsung 840 Pro.

Has impressive performance, solid, uses synchronous MLC NAND chips which ultimately you can trash them with writes for years and not be worried about a thing, hence why it comes with a ridiculous 10 year warranty on them.

I would now go with the Samsung 850 non-Pro. It uses TLC chips (same chips in good USB flash drives), and Samsung previous SSD using these NAND chips have performance degradation on old written data, and not very consistent performance. Samsung has currently no actual fix to the problem. So I would avoid it until at least it has been confirmed that it doesn't have this issue also. As the SSD was recently released a few weeks ago, you'll have to wait quiet a bit before results shows. Also, the savings isn't much, so really not worth it. Just get the Pro model and have quality chips.

I just checked my C:\Windows folder for Win 8.1 PRO 64bit and it's 16.2GB. Just to be safe consider it around 20GB
