overclocking CPU

Go to solution Solved by harrynowl,

my hero!

You and @Faceman are my best friends here :)

What is "uncore ratio"

It's what we call the cache clock, it controls the transfer of data between cpu cache etc, we tend to leave it alone while we find a good overclock for our CPUs because it could cause bluescreens in stress testing. So it's best to find max cpu clock first then max cache clock (or just leave cache alone entirely it's no big impact).

I never OC a CPU, so how could i break it?..

What are the things that i should never do when OC a CPU, i want to achieve 4.2

Don't apply too much voltage to the CPU, that's about all I can think of.

And don't use Prime 95, use something like OCCT or Intel OC program.

Increase the Clock Ratio, when your CPU fail the Stress Test you can downclock it or apply more Voltage but as @X1XNobleX1X said don't apply it too much otherwise your CPU can overheat and eventually broken.

why not?

I'm assuming you're saying why not to "using Prime95"

Prime 95, just applies too much voltage to the CPU, pushing it way beyond what it would normally do.

When doing stress test make sure your Voltage Option for CPU (in BIOS) is set to either Manual or Override, setting it to Adaptive can make the CPU pull a lot of voltage when Stress Tested which is bad.

I'm familiar with OCCT is it good?

Yes, I used it to overclock my CPU.

Even when doing this and using Prime95 version >26.6 it skyrockets my temps 15C higher than XTU/AIDA64 and 5C higher than IBT. On version 26.6 and earlier this was not the case. Also, in my experience, this only happens with Haswell CPU's, I think it might have something to do with the AVX instruction sets.

All in all, I run Intel Burn Test on high for about 10 runs for a heat test and then Intel XTU for a couple of hours for stability. It is weird though, with IBT, I pull more wattage but it hardly finds errors or BSOD's. Finding the sweet spot for voltage, in my opinion, is much easier in XTU.

I use AIDA64, it's also great. (but paid though)

OCCT, is just a problem for testing. To see if my OC is stable?

Yes, use OCCT to check if OC is stable.

I'm not used in GIGABYTE's UEFI BIOS (I'm using MSI), but there should be in the Advanced Menu if I'm not mistaken.

that is Advanced Menu

There should be an option called "CPU Core Voltage".

linustechtips.com/main/topic/41234-intel-haswell-4670k-4770k-overclocking-guide/

@ProKoN has an excellent guide that covers the Haswell and DC processors.

The G3258 can be over clocked using this guide.

Our Grace. The Feathered One. He shows us the way. His bob is majestic and shows us the path. Follow unto his guidance and His example. He knows the one true path. Our Saviour. Our Grace. Our Father Birb has taught us with His humble heart and gentle wing the way of the bob. Let us show Him our reverence and follow in His example. The True Path of the Feathered One. ~ Dimboble-dubabob III

Put VRIN override to 1.9V, and CPU Vcore to 1.275V.

Then go to frequency controls and adjust CPU ratio to 42x (4.2GHz).

First thing to do: Get an aftermarket cooler.

With the kind of clock you're trying to achieve, stock cooling will by no means be capable of keeping the processor cool. You can get decent cooling options for ~$30, such as the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, which can handle that clock and keep the processor stable and cool.

Also, always be patient with overclocking. Prepare to have your PC be unusable for about 3 days or up to a week. Just remember, patience is key :)

Last thing I would say is make sure you have a decent power supply. The processor does use more watts when overclocked that much even with the stock voltage unchanged. So if you haven't already, you might want to step up to an 80+ bronze supply or 80+ gold supplies with around 500 watts. I know about a couple gold supplies that have really good deals on newegg right now.

Hope this helps!  :D
