I have an old MSI Laptop which has lost its own PSU, however I have a Toshiba Laptop PSU that has an output of 19V 3.42Amps. The MSI Laptop requires 19V 2.1Amps. I did a quick research and read that as long as the voltages are exactly the same and the Amperages for the PSU are the same or above to what the laptop requires then it is fine. Should I be fine with this, I mean the voltages are the same only difference is the amperage, which is higher on the Toshiba Laptop PSU.

I learned it the hard way By using a 2.5 amp laptop PSU in a laptop that needed 7.8 amps..... RIP PSU

plug it in. see what it does.

 

i've mismatched all kinds of chargers before. i've found that various Voltages and amperages work sometimes. they just charge at different rates.

if the plug fits, try it.

We can't Benchmark like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to shove more GPUs in your computer. Like the time I needed to NV-Link, because I needed a higher HeavenBench score, so I did an SLI, which is what they called NV-Link back in the day. So, I decided to put two GPUs in my computer, which was the style at the time. Now, to add another GPU to your computer, costs a new PSU. Now in those days PSUs said OCZ on them, "Gimme 750W OCZs for an SLI" you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was that I had two GPUs in my rig, which was the style at the time! They didn't have RGB PSUs at the time, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big green ones.

Yes that's not a problem and you correct about the larger amperage provided by the Toshiba power brick.

Lol. After reading that and knowing that my old gaming laptop's exhaust would burn after a few seconds I checked out its power requirements. Only 6.3 amps :(

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Majority of laptops that are either: Entry level - Medium performance don't require a lot of power since their hardware components are not built for extreme performance.

 

Your CPU requires 47W.

40W is fairly common with Ultrabooks, Convertibles, etc. running "U" or "Y" processors. I have a Core M (Y processor) convertible, and it sips power from the outlet. When fully charged, it just sips about 4W from the outlet (based on my trusty power meter).

no, you'd need a ULV chip no matter what for that. Regular i3 and i5 chips would require more power; 25-35W for their chips + rest of system draw

Yeah that's true. 15W CPUs + rest of system equates to around 35-40W indeed

I guess Pentium Dual Cores for mobile devices are under ULV then?

 

EDIT: Well I just looked up the TDP for the Toshiba Laptop's CPU, it's 35W.

A 35W CPU with a 65W PSU is just fine. A 35W CPU with a 40W PSU is asking for power loss shutdowns under load.

A 35W CPU with a 65W PSU is just fine. A 35W CPU with a 40W PSU is asking for power loss shutdowns under load.

Not if the battery can provide power during momentary peaks. :) It'd be a sorry sight to see a machine that needs to switch between power sources just because of a weak power brick though.

That needs to be specifically coded to happen, and it's not a good alternative. MSI laptops did that and their machines throttled like a banshee because of it.
