So I found an insane deal on a 970 msi gaming edition card for $410 CAD ($320 USD) and I was wondering, does it max out all games at 1080p? Should I expect it to max out GTA5 at 60fps? Also how does the 3.5gb thing affect gaming? Is this card a good improvement over my 770?

Yes it's worth it and will max out almost every game at 1080p.

Also how does the 3.5gb thing affect gaming?

It doesn't at 1080p/1440p as of right now and very rarely at 4k (never with a single card, assuming you want decent FPS).

I dont plan on doing 1440p or 4k anytime soon, I wouldnt be doing it with a 970 either

looking at your casing

i will suggest going for the ref design cooler GPUs

the open type coolers like the Twin Forzr will run a few degrees hotter in a small case

At 1080p the Vram issue should not come close to effecting you, and I think it will max everything at 1080p for a while. *Unless GTA V is worse than a Ubisoft game at launch I would say expect 60fps in that as well.

I drilled holes in the side right over the gpu fans. My CPU has never gone over 61c. I also have 5 HP fans going.

1-does it max out all games at 1080p?

2-Should I expect it to max out GTA5 at 60fps?

3-Also how does the 3.5gb thing affect gaming?

4-Is this card a good improvement over my 770?

1- Yes

2- Yes, most likely.

3- no, not for now...not at 1080p

4- Yes

about the VRAM...as games evolve they constantly use more and more detailed texture and higher resolution texture packs...so it will come a time where the card might run out of vram and will get some stutters while playing, all you'll have to do then is lower the TEXTURE QUALITY SETTING one notch and it will go away...but this will happen even with a 4GB card when we will be there..so it's not something you should worry about.

Depends what you mean by max out. 60 FPS ultra is usually achievable on my 970 at stock in the newest games (though it is factory overclocked), but if you mean running 4xMSAA then obviously no on a lot of games. But the MSI Gaming is one of the best 970s on the market, so you'll probably get a little more performance than I do (I just run at stock now that spring brings heat and humidity to my neck of the woods). It's an awesome 1080p card and for that price it's the best bang for your buck card on the market right now since the R9 290 has gone up so much in price. The performance delta between a good 970 and a 770 is pretty large:

The VRAM thing is of course annoying, but it's awesome for the price.

I recently bought a MSI GTX960 about a month ago. Great GPU, but I'm thinking of selling it and buying a 970 or 980 to future proof my PC a bit.

Thoughts?

What games do you play and what frame rates do you get in those games?

Going from a 770 to 970....depends on which 770 you have. 2Gb or 4 Gb.

I could have bought a 970 but the coil whine issues and 3.5 Vram gate scared me off.

I decided to buy the 770 4 Gb card now and that should be fine for me until Pascal.

I only game in 1080p anyhow. But with the 4 GB I can finally use anti aliasing.

But.... I bought it used. Guy said it was used for 4 months in SLI.

When I got it, it literally looked brand new. No dust of anything...crazy good.

Brand is Zotac GTX 770 4 Gb. It's already overclocked at 1111 Mhrtz Boost. I've hit 1202 Core and 7298 Memory.

I guess that's not bad.

Only did it for benchies as I cap my frames for games and nothing goes under 35 fps.

The most taxing probably is Dying Light maxed out.

Recently I've been play L4D2 and CoH. Casual games. 60FPS on L4D2 (Max Settings), and I haven't tested CoH, should easily be around 60FPS.

World of Tanks (HIGH), 60FPS depending on the settings.

Battlefield Hardline Beta (Medium/High) I think I averaged close to 60FPS. All 1920x1080.

The 960 is a great card but I think I want a little bit more power.

If your maxing out your games why do you want more power?

Because future games might begin to fall under 60FPS. I think I'll keep the 960 for now, save money.
