Photoshop : Texture Paint [Or Whatever it is?]

Koka458

I'm just a beginner in Photoshop.

I want to know how can I sort of paint texture in a single file, I mean the sort of thing we paint in 'Far Cry Map editor'.

Not a patient fellah are you... ;)

You need to create a custom brush/set of brushes.

1. Find some texture you want to use and open it in Photoshop.

2. Create a selection using the lasso tool [L].

3. Add some feathering using the refine edge tool [Alt]+[Ctrl]+[R].

4. Copy your selection [Ctrl]+[C].

5. Create a new image [Ctrl]+[N] which should automatically size to the selection.

6. Paste your selection [Ctrl]+[V].

7. Delete the background layer.

8. Desaturate your texture [Ctrl]+[shift]+.

9. Hold down [Ctrl] and click the layer preview in the layers pallet to select your image.

10. Go to Edit -> Define Brush Preset and give it a name.

11. Using the brush tool paint with it.

  • Adding some amount of transparency before saving will improve the brush
  • The more feathering the better it will look.
  • Create multiple brushes with similar but unique patterns and layer them for more realistic texturing.
  • Increasing the size jitter and angle jitter (Shape Dynamics) will further improve realism.
  • If you want to paint with it instead of clicking over and over you need to increase the scattering as well so it doesn't overlap heavily and become solid black.

This image for example uses 16 custom brushes I created from pictures of clouds using the method I demonstrated above:
