so just got my 980 yesterday and i popped it outta the plastic shell to take a look at it cuz im super excited i got it and will be working on my build ina few months. so i handled it in a way i think that was appropriate by gripping it by its cooler and not the pcb will that help prevent static discharge?

if you are concerned with static, what you can do is touch some piece of grounded metal (a pc case with a plugged in power supply would do the trick) and you're pretty much good to go.

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB

Yup, grab the cooler, not the PCB.

It's very hard to kill a gpu with static anyways, you need a lot of static to zap a gpu.

good to know i wanna be overkill in making sure i dont discharge any of my parts on accident does evga cover static discharge in their warranty i didnt say anything about it.

if you grabbed it by the cooler than no. unless you yanked it around. you're fine.

I don't know, but It's pretty sure that they don't cover that.

If you are really that worried just touch a grounded piece of metal, don't put it on a carpet or stuff that can make static.

The chances of zapping a gpu are very low, you need to really screw it up and have lots of static to do that.

Don't dance in the carpet or rub a balloon in your hair if you're going to handle a GPU/Mobo/CPU after that.

I hold my GPU by wherever, not much to worry about in terms of shocking it with static considering the thing has a backplate and such, and doubt I'll break anything by doing it. (Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming)
