So then what is their competitor to the 980?

upcoming 390/390X.

 

Maybe even the 295X2

Did you mean AMD's current or new lineup?

 

If the new I would say the R9 380 would be the direct competitor to a GTX970.

and the 290x is the competitor to the 780ti not 970

the 970 is better than both the 290x and 780ti

The 290x and 970 are very alike because of the price/performance ratio. The 980 has a bad price/performance compared to those two, so there isn't really a competitor (yet)

looking through this review that uses the latest drivers for all the cards, its clear the 980 and 290X are competitors for the most part. I would say the 970 is currently closer to the 290 in gaming performance based on scaling.

its really unfair to compare a dual core gpu to a single one, even if their performance is the same (its not anyways)

Because its out of production

Nvidia stopped making 770s 780s and 780tis so now the ones there are left are more expensive

anyways yes, they are similarly priced and the 295 wrecks the 980 is pretty much any possible benchmark.

I have a 780 and told myself I would wait a year and a half and pick up another when they are stupid cheap....nope.

With these prices I may as well upgrade to the 900 series but screw that.

I am going to wait for AMD's response and see how that effects prices. Then I'll weigh my options and see what's the best deal.

theyre pretty cheap on craigslist, less than a 970 for sure
