PSU requirement for a 290x?

This is my last question before building. I plan on getting the gigabyte r9 290x windforce and an i5 4690k. How strong does my psu have to be? Any recommendations for psu's?

That's far, far overkill when CFX 290X systems pull around 700W. I'd still buy one, only for the upgradability and future plans.

550W - 650W. Even then you will be using at most 65%. Get a 80+ Bronze or Gold unit to be safe.

750W - 850W is "Recommended" but way to much.

Good quality, well known brand, 80+bronze certified or better, and at least 600W

500W is fine for stock, a decent amount higher for overclocking.

 

Full system only used 397w in a gaming scenario, I believe anandtech uses an overclocked 4960x for their benchmarks but I'm not sure.

 Not in the slightest bit,  say if he went with a Vapor-X 290x its been seen pulling almost 430W on just 1 card alone under load.

The only source I have is a review on newegg saying that the users Kill-a-Watt Meter spiked to 1020W with 2 of the Vapor-X 4GB cards.

Edit: Tech Power up reported a peak of 309W but the average should be around 288W

That's far closer to reality. AnandTech, Tom's Hardware and TechPowerUp seem to report similar numbers for the 290X, I haven't seen anything above 320W (except for the AnandTech review, since it cites total system draw instead of GPU-only draw. Note that they are all reference cards, and aftermarket solutions will no doubt have slightly higher numbers at stock.
