AMD Vs Intel Build (After Directx12 is released) First-time PC Builder

jarude37
1. Budget & Location

My budget is around 33,00 Php.  In USD, it's about 750$ more or less based from the current exchange rate. I live in a third world country so prices of components here is a lot higher compared to prices on newegg, etc. So please think of my budget in the 650-720$ range. The only available component brands who has distributors in the philippines to my knowledge is only gigabyte and msi so they're the only ones slightly priced higher and with available warranty for returns. There are also other brands like asus and zotac but I have to find them in local shops to find good deals with warranties so as to avoid overpriced online listings. Shipping products from overseas is also not an option due the highly overpriced amount to pay for import taxes here in the Philippines. I hope you can help me build this even with all of these restrictions.

2. Aim

I aim to build a reasonably priced gaming pc that can play 1080p games on high at 60 fps. I am still currently waiting for the release of directx12 to see see how its'effect on the AMD vs. Intel battle in terms of gaming performance. I'm currently favoring AMD due to lower cost on cpu and motherboard but willing to go intel if the fps difference is still high in directx12.

3. Monitors

I currently received a gift from my friend. It's an ASUS VX239H (http://www.asus.com/ph/Monitors_Projectors/VX239H/).

4. Peripherals

No need for mice & keyboard.

Maybe I'll buy a cheap windows 8.1 key and upgrade to windows 10 when it's available but will not be included in the budget.

AMD Route:

Processor: AMD FX 8320E

(6,930 Php = 156.62 USD)

Motherboard: Msi 970 Gaming

(4,900 Php = 110.73 USD)

Intel Route:

Processor: Intel I5-4460

(7,700 Php = 174.02 USD)

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H97-Gaming 3

(5,490 Php = 124.08 USD)

GPU: Zotac Geforce GTX 960

(10,000 Php = 226.01 USD)

*MSI one costs around 13,000 Php(293.81 USD).

RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury 8GB Single DDR3 1866 CL10

(3,450 Php = 77.97 USD)

*Plan to upgrade to 16 GB dual channel in the future. Also need clearance for Cooler Master Hyper 212X. I will move the fan slightly higher as to not affect  the cooling performance.

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212X

(1,650 Php = 37.29 USD)

*Not included in the Intel Route. Will upgrade in the future if I'm not satisfied with max load temps due to the high temperature in the Philippines.

HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB

(2,590 Php = 58.54 USD)

PSU: EVGA 500B 500 Watts 80+ Bronze Power Supply

(1,950 = 44.07 USD)

*Most reasonably priced PSU with 80+ bronze rating, good reviews, and haswell ready if I decide to go the Intel route.

Casing: Thermaltake Versa G1/G2

(1,990 = 44.98 USD)

*I find it to be a good deal with the included 2 fans and front and bottom filters. In the website, it had a picture of a sample build with a thermaltake frio advanced (159.2 mm), so I concluded that the CM Hyper 212X (158 mm) will fit even if in the thermaltake website, it states that it has a CPU Cooler Height Limitation of 155 mm.

AMD Route Total: 33,550 Php = 758.25 USD

Intel Route Total: 33,170 Php = 749.66 USD (*CM Hyper 212X not included)

I am very open to any and all suggestions. If you think a certain brand/part is better than what I have listed in here, I will try to find it online and in local shops and report back to you guys. Your help and opinions will be very much appreciated.

Sorry for the very long post.

Go with the intel build. For gaming its going to be much better. I advise getting an i5 4440 and h81 motherboard. With the money saved you can get a much better gpu like a 290 or gtx 970.

AMD isn't a budget option when chasing performance.

Hard to speculate on DX12 yet...but you could probably use Mantle performance to hazard a guess...

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

with some h81 motherboards you can't even overclock your gpu.

OP H97 or a z97/z87 board would be a bit better then a h81 one

Cheapest I5-4440 I can find anywhere with actual warranty costs 8,350 Php = 118.85 USD. This was actually the 1st Intel processor I was looking for before finding the cheaper I5-4460. Doesn't an H81 Mobo need a bios update to run the CPU? I found a Zotac GTX 970 for 16,000 Php = 361.86 USD. I don't know If I can fit that in my budget even with a cheap h81 mobo replacement. I like the listed gigabyte board above because I'm trying to achieve a red and black color scheme. Ahahahaha

Any opinions regarding Directx 12 and if AMD or Intel will benefit more?

You mean CPU right...not GPU?

The h81 is still perfectly viable for locked CPU's like the i5 4440., which doesn't hamper GPU performance either.

What? H81 doesn't allow CPU overclocking (except for the pentium) but AFAIK you can still overclock your GPU.

I would probably choose the 970 over the r9 290 because the lowest price I've seen for it is around 18,500 Php = 407.09 USD while the 970 is around 16,000 Php = 361.86 USD.

I don't like to go over the budget so I might still stick with the 960 because I plan to stick to 1080p and it seems plenty enough.

AMD will probably see more benefit from DX12, but that's only in DX12 games, current games won't see a boost, unless they are updated to use DX12, and intel will probably still perform better than AMD, just with a smaller gap.

While not the same.. compare an Intel or FX CPU with DX11 & Mantle to see what a little bit of 'DX12 type' tech can do.

I plan to build this once I decide which route to go. I think if the promises of directx12 is true, I might go with a fx-6300 and allot more of the budget to the GPU. Just hope that it doesn't bottleneck a 970 in directx12. Also looking forward to the Radeon 300 Series againts the Nvidia 900 series so this proposed parts list can change until Directx12 benchmarks.

Please give me feedback on my choice of parts list.
I have made a list also in pcpartpicker.com for comparison. (http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3FtxCJ)
I wasn't able to find a decent h81 motherboard so I went with a cheap but very good ASUS motherboard as recommended by Linus.
