Sata cables are for data transfer. You can use the following for monitors:

DVI-I and D

HDMI

DisplayPort

VGA

It's mostlikely a Ribbon cable if it's a laptop. so you really can't use it. Laptops LOVE ribbon cables. Displayport does look like sata btw.

If it was a laptop then there's a 99.99% chance that it was a ribbon cable.

Depending on the age of the laptop, the ribbon cable presents a video signal.

Modern laptops and tablets uses embedded DisplayPort (eDP). The max length is very short but that is ok, as it, as mentioned, it is designed for tablets and laptops displays, consumes even less power than normal DisplayPort (which consumes less power than VGA, DVI, HDMI, and HDMI).

Assuming it is indeed eDP being used in the laptop, you need something like this:

to do the conversion, as DisplayPort requires components which eDP doesn't require (to consume less power).
