adding a second hdd ?

You can add it to your new computer and use it. For the most part you should be able to simply physically mount it into your case, and connect the power and data cables to it. Also, keep in mind what @LoGiCalDrm wrote about the boot order in BIOS.

so i have my main boot drive with all my games and such, but i have an old 250gb hdd that i want to throw in for a backup drive/ photos and videos. but the 250gb drive was pulled from my old pc and has an os installed on it, so would i boot my system then plug it in so it wouldnt mess things up ?  any advice is appreciated

should be fine, if its not tell the computer via the boot menu to boot from your C dive and wipe it when in Windows.
