FCC Approves Net Neutrality rules, reclassifies broadband as a utility (+ other NN updates/FCC rulings from the hearing)

How hard is it to understand that this is regulating the ISPs - not the Internet - so the ISPs can't fuck with the Internet, and that with how things are right now there's no real competition between ISPs in America?

This confuses me.

The FCC is under the executive branch of the US gov.  They are there to execute and enforce laws, not to create them (that's the legislative branch's job).

Maybe I'm dumb as rocks, or maybe this is really questionable.

Also, this is supposedly anti-big evil companies, but Google looked over it and tweaked it for the FCC?

Again, maybe I'm dumb.  Please explain.

Welcome to the clusterfuck known as the United States Republic, enjoy your stay in trying to understand how the system even works.

But Title II is being used to regulate ISPs like utilities to stop them from bending the market over and charging for fast lanes.

For now, Googles interests (and other companies) line up with consumer interests. Fast lanes and bandwidth caps and everything else harm business AND their consumers, its mutually beneficial for everyone to kick the ISPs in the ass.

Title 2 was not created for ISPs. It was created for phone/television years ago and gave the FCC the power to regulate it. Look what they can do to television now just move that over to the Internet and ban. Welcome to censorship part 2.

apparently it's rather hard. Just remember if you consider a lot of the well written propaganda telling everyone to go back to sleep it is difficult to get to the truth of the matter.

Big companies and government agencies pay good money to people who specialise in propaganda and lobbying, they know how to word an argument to make even the worst shit sound like a good idea.

The FCC didn't create any laws, it just classified ISPs as a common carrier under Title II of the Communications Act

Then why are you here? This law only pertains inside the US.

Because the precedence that was set by the FCC will affect the entire globe and how governments proceed with their own legislation, that doesn't mean that the US has ultimate power in the internet now. The internet is a global thing.

The US has just decided to whip their ISPs into shape and prevent them from abusing even more of the ill gained power they have.

Stop being so obtuse and try to use fallacy filled arguments to dismiss others positions. Bullshit is a bad colour for a discussion like this.

You act as if they now don't have the ability to tell the ISP what to censor in the same way that they don't regulate television but the broadcasters themselves. There are many ways you can twist this and make it not go how you wanted.

Do you actually realize how big this issue was?

The ISP's had without this change the power to fee every company in the US that uses the internet or even kill off entire companies.

And as many of those companies provied world wide services it natrually has an huge effect on the entire world.

Fast and free internet = more consumption and innovation = better US economy

That depends, if the name was deliberately chosen to make it sound like something it isn't then yes,   however given the name is representative of what it is then I'd say not really.

No, what it means is as soon as something like this becomes a thing in any other country then the precedent is set and other countries will follow suit.  I don't need Aussie ISPs artificially throttling my internet for a few more dollars because some money hungry American ISP can pay off his corrupt government and do it.

On the flipside, we really need to kick out the LNC & Labor shitwanks and get more folks like the ASP & APP in power here (who can argue with sexy pirates? :P) and fix the broken mess that is the NBN, as well as tell US MAFIAA to leave our ISPs and citizens alone. -.-;

Oh trust me, I know. Been dealing with these issues for 17yrs. But I can tell you right now from a small data service provider, these regulations will have un intended consequences for smaller companies and consumers. Guess who is going to pay for the upgrades so a network doesn't get saturated??? The ISP? Nope, its you!

It's always the consumer that pays, always has been and always will. This is not the result of title2.  I don't know why you think the consumer is going to be worse of now than before, do you think the ISPs have been absorbing costs instead of passing them onto customers?

We've already been giving our tax dollars to the ISPs so they can upgrade their networks. Guess what they haven't done? Upgrade their networks. Instead, they've been twiddling their thumbs, abusing their monopolies and trying to demonize whatever the FCC does that tries to regulate them.

They have been but its not an easy prospect, there is a lot of cost involved in it. Unfortunately, sometimes its the public that stands in the way. But for whatever the reason its not matching the speed of technology.

None. I just have to deal with them plus other utilities on a daily basis.

Look, I'll be honest. I don't like most ISP and what they do. I just got Google Fiber after being locked with TWC for 20yrs. because of the lack of competition in my area. I'm all for competition.

I just a skeptic and would rather they spent more effort into finding solutions to what the true problem is. At least here in the US.

That would be capitalism going too far and into the realm of corporate dictatorship.   A balance has to be struck between corporate freedom to grow, develop and protect their income and rules, regulations, etc to stop them from fleecing a captive consumer in an essential service that has been monopolized.
