Used Cards Any good?

Darkr

Hello, so I found that used 290x's and 290's are going for around 200-300 euro... good deal. But is it worth it? I'll be doing gaming, so I might overclock a bit.

Also, is there a big difference between the 290 and 290x?

Thanks

Why not? The R9 290X isn't that old, so there really should be a problem.

The R9 290 is only a tad slower, by overclocking it, it should be almost the same.

I have gotten my last 4 cards off ebay! ^.^
And I'm using a R9 290 right now.

I chose ebay because there is a 30 day money back guarantee. Meaning if it isn't just as described you just ship it back and get your money back.
And my personal preference on buying used cards is just don't keep them for a long time. Cards will die over time, and if you keep it for 6 years after someone may have bitcoin mined with the card you are asking for trouble.

FYI the R9 290 kicks out a lot of heat. I would really recommend a GTX 970 if you can. Unless it's often cold where you are.

Depends. If the owner didn't overclock it to hell and/or mined on it 24/7, then yeah, worth it.

Also, AFAIK, new R9 290/290X are going for 200-300 euros as well.

Got my friend a 7950 (r9 280) for £90 which is around the same price as a new 260x.

He absolutely loves it but I have yet to test or see it in person.

Sounds great though.

Just be careful of cards frequently used for mining.

just avoid buying if the seller describes the card as "Gently Used" or "used for a few months." That's a vague way of saying it wasn't used for gaming.

there's no harm in it. a lot of decent brands offer 2 or more years guarantees so chances are a 290x will still have a manufacturer warranty.

just make sure the warranty is transferable. if the warranty documentation that comes with the card doesn't mention non-transferability, than it should be transferable.

Around what price would the switch from a 290 to a 290x be worth? 20? 30?

I personally do not think it is worth while. 20 bucks is 10% of a used card for about 1-5% performance.

Ask the owner if he used them for mining. Bitcoin mining ruin graphics cards.

Less inclined to use the bitcoin excuse since it's POINTLESS to mine on GPU's.. has been for quite some time...

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

People still try. Some people don't understand the power to hash ratio. And just think free money.
