Only 2.5" SSDs?

Go to solution Solved by Aniallation,

Why exactly are SSDs only 2.5"? I mean, obviously because they can. Wouldn't it be cheaper to make 3.5" ones? Why not?

Even 2.5" is much more space then needed.

Making only one size means that both laptops and desktops can use the same drives, instead of having to make two different sizes.

No, it wouldn't be cheaper as space isn't really the issue with SSDs.

Plus, it's cheaper to just produce one form factor rather than two.

Because its wasting space and materials, SSDs have more than enough room in 2.5" sizes.

SSDs only need a very small space...
some of the samsung SSDs dont even fill half the 2.5" case...

its nand flash, so you cant really just make the chips bigger and have them be cheaper

Besides, by the time you put enough nand into a SSD to fill up 2.5 casing you are better off going PCIe to utilize the extra bandwidth

The 2.5" size is already too large for them. Why make it even larger? All cases I have seen support 2.5", there is absolutely no reasons for them to do 3.5".

OEM PCs don't have 2.5" bays, but then again, SSDs don't actually need to be mounted to anything.
