Check out Boxx Apexx 5 $60K 36-core workstation

Boxx today unveiled what it calls ‘the world’s most advanced computer workstation’. We wouldn’t really doubt that claim since the company’s new Apexx 5 comes with a 36-core CPU and up to five GPUs.

The Apexx 5 is using two 18-core Intel Xeon 2699V3 CPUs with liquid-cooling to boot. The two CPUs have a base clock speed of 2.3GHz and Turbo Boost speeds of up to 3.6GHz. So we’re talking of 72-threads in total. If you think that’s impressive, wait till you find out about the amount of RAM this beast packs. It comes with 512GB of DDR4 2133MHz RAM. If you need more than that for some strange reason, Boxx will happily manage that for you.

Coming to the GPU, the Apexx 5 can take in four dual-slot NVIDIA Quadro K6000, Tesla, or AMD FirePro W9100 graphics cards. That’s not all though. You can also fit in an additional single GPU in case you want the four main cards for rendering alone and use the fifth one to drive the monitors. If you need crazy high amounts of storage, Boxx has you covered with enough space for eight mechanical hard disk drives or 16 SSD drives.

As you can imagine, these crazy specs do not come cheap. The base configuration of  the Apexx 5 will set you back by $13,191, while for the highest end configuration, you will need to shell out around $60,000 or higher.

Looks great, although I wonder why you'd want to liquid cool xeons... I suppose air coolers may be too bulky to allow for that massive psu.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

sudo chmod -R 000 /*

This would take me a lot of simulations to justify lol. Still kinda want one.

It's hard to tell from those images but it looks like the PSU gets pretty close to one of the Xeons limiting the space for an air cooling solution. The second one is probably just for consistency.

space, liquid cooling allows you to move the heat sinks to somewhere they fit better

Can it run Minecraft?

Obviously not, minecraft's minimum requirements is a 72 core CPU....

16 core / 32 thread Xeons probably get toasty

do you really need that much thread if software has hardware acceleration?

i mean xeons are used for the ECC memory, but that many cores?
