I was wondering how I would go about building a custom laptop?

As long as changing the GPU and storage is an option.

It would be awesome to have a budget laptop with like an i3 and a 970m.

This isn't for me to build myself, a friend was wondering and it got me curious.

It would be saweet, but I don't think that it is possible ATM.

I heard of a website that did it. This was around 4 months ago and one of my Twitch viewers told me he did it.

Sounds even more expensive than buying a prebuilt laptop (which is already expensive enough ffs)

Not possible, the parts are too hard to get and they're usually custom iirc

What's custom iirc?

It's possible just buy a barebone like here http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=barebone+laptop

You add the cpu/ ram/ hdd/ the gpu is a mxm card so you can swap them :)

They can be found quite cheap and it's easy to build, you can find all the parts on Ebay and Amazon.

Barebone laptops do exist, but that's about all there is. It shouldn't be impossible to fully custom build one, but that definitely won't be easy.

MSi gaming laptops come in many configs, I would check out the options with that before going down the road of custom building a laptop.

back in 2011 I tried to do something similar using a 2500k and a 560ti with a pcie extension and using metal plates as body it was too bulky although it's going to be surely bulky due to me using normal size ones. although the feeling I get when trying it and the experience was awesome but too much work >.<

It is indeed, I built one last year for a friend I got the well known MSI barebone and got him a cheap i5 from ebay and some spare ram I had laying around and shoved a 770m in it.

This very much interests me.

Unfortunately when I look up barebone on Amazon UK, nothing good comes up.

I might do this when I need a laptop

Try Ebay or google. You can also search for Sager/Clevo laptops.

Where would I buy a laptop graphics card compatible with a barebone laptop?

Enough sites that sell them just google, But they run pretty cheap on ebay.

Can't find any good ones on eBay UK. I feel like it's harder to do this in the UK than it would be the US. There is only one explanation for the US always having better things than everywhere...

Could you find me a decent 800m series card or 970m for a decent price and I will work through similar items?

Thanks :)

But make sure the barebone has  a MXM slot not all barebones have these.

Jesus laptop GPUs are more expensive than I though!

As expensive as they are, Puget systems allows you to fully customize your laptop.

It's weird, it was only a few years ago that ASUS tried the entire build your own laptop gig; supplying only mobo, chassis, and screen, and selling the rest of the componenets seperately. I doubt they had any market penetration because that idea died very quickly.  I do see a few barebones systems being sold, as well as mobile GPU's. Don't know how well it would all come together though.
