Hi. DVI is complicated - help me!

Pyroven

Hey so basically I have a 1080p panel.

I have overclocked it to 80Hz and it only has DVI and VGA ports on the back.

I have not really noticed a difference between 60Hz and 80Hz and the thought occurred to me that it may be the the DVI cable bottlenecking it.

So my question is:

What are the specs of a MONO-link DVI at 1080p?

What are the specs of a DUAL-link DVI at 1080p?

It would really help if someone could guide me.

EDIT// Also could someone find me a super cheap Dual-Link DVI-D Cable? Best I can find is £5.99 (I need a minimum length of 2M)

It's not about the cable.

If you haven't noticed the difference between 60Hz and 80Hz then you must be running an IPS panel?

I TAKE BACK EVERYTHING!

Sig under construction.

-snip-

Seems like single link DVI is 60Hz max at 1080p and Dual link is 85Hz at 1080p

Wuuuuut.. These specs are not alright.. I'll try to find another source..

Do you even DVI? You have dual and single link and they have different specs.

Single-link is up to 75Hz@1080p

Dual-link is up to 144hz@1080p

Can you explain or give your source?

As much as it is annoying when people ask for source...

http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1670817

Single-link DVI can do up to 75Hz at 1080p as that's the highest "common" refresh rate that stays under the 165MHz pixel clock limitation of single-link DVI at 1920x1080

As for dual-link well there isn't any 1080p monitor higher then 144Hz that runs off DVI anyways.

Okay cool, I asked for your source due to the conflicting answers I was getting

People have run 1440p 120Hz off of dual-link DVI. AFAIK DVI can go as high as you can get the pixel clock to go, although anything beyond 165MHz is outside of DVI spec. With dual-link that's enough for 2560x1440/1600 at 60Hz or 1080p 144Hz, with single-link it's enough for 1080p 75Hz. It can be overclocked beyond that though, the upper limits will only depend on what the monitor and graphics card can both handle.
