Is my CPU good enough for gaming?

Hey guys, so I am planning on getting a 970 soon so I can play battlefield 4. ( I only get 20 FPS ATM on low settings with my 560 TI,) So I am wondering, will my CPU be enough, or do I really have to upgrade that too? I am running a stock cooler ATM, so I cant OC it

upgrade your cpu if you are building a whole new system or if what you want to upgrade is no longer supported by it.

the 2500k is great for gaming and I think you can OC it more if you need more performance.

Also, I have a Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 motherboard, will this board support SLI, as well as the new 900 series cards? I could not find it on their website anywhere :/ seems like an old board to me.

Also, this is off-topic but I went into CPU-Z and it says the speed of my DRAM Frequency is 665.1 Mhz, I have 1600 mhZ installed into my PC, In my understanding In CPU-Z, you have to times your RAM frequency by two to get the actual speed. It is taking into account the multiplier, so it only shows it as half, so this is werid.

you should just find a good aftermarket heatsink and overclock that cpu a little bit to give it some extra perf

your RAM is DDR which stand for DUAL DATA RATE so the actual clock speed is 2x665=1333mhz...if you want your ram to run at 1600mhz make sure you enable it's XMP profile in your BIOS.

So will I notice a improvement in preformence if I increase the speed for my RAM?

Doubtful. But get a nice heatsink and overclock that 2500k. Those Sandy Bridge CPUs are some of the strongest overclockers ever made. You can make a good argument that the i5-2500k, i7-2600k, and i7-2700k are the best gaming processors of all time considering they're still high-end gaming CPUs more than four years after their release. I can't think of any other CPUs ever made that can make that claim.

With a dedicated GPU it'll be negligible in games, if anything at all. Your CPU is still an amazing gaming CPU, especially when overclocked. I recommend you get a GPU if you want to upgrade. If you tell me your budget, if you have one, I can make a recommendation.

not in games if you use a graphics card, no.

what you want is a new graphics card...the GTX 560ti is considered very low end by todays standard...look for an R9 290 or GTX 970 GPU.

An R9 280 or GTX 960 (770,780...) would also be worthy upgrades.

There's something wrong other than your CPU and GPU selection. Monitor temperatures to make sure there is no throttling. I had a GTX 560 non-Ti and could play WAY above 20 frames per second:

If you're only getting 20 fps with a 2500K and a GTX 560 Ti, there's something you need to troubleshoot before upgrading.

665MHz means your RAM is running at about ~1333MHz effectively. DDR means double data rate, so 1600MHz RAM actually operates at ~800MHz, 1333MHz at ~666MHz, etc. You might have to check for XMP profile or set speeds and timings manually in the BIOS to get it running at 1600MHz, but this isn't a big deal. Makes a small difference most of the time in gaming.

That CPU is still plenty powerful, but it needs an overclock.  You might not even need a new GPU.  Try overclocking first.  Invest in a cooler master hyper 212 EVO for $25-$30, and overclock that CPU to 4.2Ghz+.  Overclocking is easy, and safe when done properly, you will find many people on this forum willing to help you with it.  Do not buy a new CPU unless you are unhappy with your performance.  That CPU has a lot of life left in it, you can probably squeeze another couple years out of it.

Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it. I'm on my phone now so I can't quote anything unfortunately, however I have some questions. I'm afraid to overclock my CPU beacuse I've never over clocked before. I'm afraid I may screw something up in the bios. And all games run reasonably well on my pc, so it's strange I have framrate issues with multiplayer in battlefield 4.

no expert on the 560ti but it should get more than that, its not a cpu bottleneck but id definitely do some gaming and alt+tab and see in msi afterburner what your gpu usage is, if its not pinned at 99% you have a problem somewhere.

with game engines getting better (not mmo-rpgs obviously) people with q6600's are only starting to get limited but if on a good board and overclocked to 3.5ghz+/- they still perform great. so i'd say your 2500k will last just as long, 2018???

Yeah, there is surely something wrong here, in Battlefield 4 with everything set down to the max I get around 20-30 FPS max. Here is a screenshot of my GPU usage below right after playing battlefield 4 on multiplayer, my GPU usage peaked at 20%, why is this? I also noticed this because it was not making any sound.

Your GTX 560Ti is not performing at full potential. The usage is only topping up at 34% (in your screenshot).

Second, the GTX 560Ti won't get you high framerates in BF4 when you have the graphical setting maxed out (i.e. Ultra settings, 4X MSAA, HABO, etc). You need something much more powerful to do that. Plus, 1GB of VRAM will limit your performance as well.

1GB of VRAM was already holding me back in BF3 with my two Radeon HD 5850's.

Realistically, you'd probably be looking at High / Medium settings with a GTX 560 Ti of you want to maintain a minimum of ~60 FPS in multiplayer.
