Turn a 7870 xt to a 7950

brownninja97

My current stuff is a core clock of 1000mhz

memory clock 1250

How much higher would i have to go before i can match a 7950.

Btw the card is voltage locked, i can oc higher but not in my current case as it reached 83oc so overclocking would be a bad idea. Once i get a intake fan it will help cooling a lot as my current case has a exhaust and thats it.

It should already beat a stock 7950 which is at 800mhz.

Of course, a 7950 should never be left at stock.

if you got a aftermarket air cooler then you should be able to clock it until you reach the stable limit at the locked voltage. my mates sapphire 7870 got to 1150mhz before we had to put the voltage up but that was still running under 70c at 1150mhz, i think we got it to 1275mhz when we increased the voltage.

Ive got the xfx double d cooler. It was cheaper the sapphire one which was why i got it and weirdly it was cheaper then the reference design version as well.

According to Tom's Hardware about 1150mhz, although I believe you'd need slightly less, probably around 1100mhz.

CrossFire

PowerColor's HD7870 PCS+ Myst Edition shows its Tahiti roots when it comes to CrossFire configurations; you cannot pair it up to a normal Radeon HD 7870. Matching it up to any Radeon HD 7900-series card isn't a problem, though. In fact, we installed our review sample next to a HIS 7950 X², and we matched the performance level of the two cards by overclocking the PowerColor HD7870 PCS+ Myst Edition to 1.15 GHz. This gets us close to the same single-frame rendering times. However, if you leave both cards at their factory-set frequencies, you'll see a lot of micro-stuttering. Even RadeonPro couldn’t alleviate the issue, leaving us with dropped frames.

I tried to match your processor by disabling HyperThreading, TurboBoost and 2 cores. I get slightly better physic score probably because of Ivy Bridge better IPC.

800mhz / 1250mhz = P6022

850mhz / 1250mhz = P6250

Using AMD Catalyst 13.x (13.150.1.0 June 21) driver.

Btw, 7870 XT/LE usually score around 8k-9k when clocked at 1150mhz.

Nope its at 0%. I tried to push the memory up but that lowers the score. 12.104.0.0 Thats the driver version im using maybe i should upgrade. Are there any programs i can use which auto update it.

Some of this could be due to the other shitty dell parts at the ram is clocked to 667mhz even being ddr3. also its a H61 board which is horrible and its a dell. Also i think the i3 may play a part in some of these issues.

Increase the power limit to +15/+19/+20, else your overclocking will be useless and you'll get less performance.

Monitor your VRM temperature with GPUZ.

I use gpu meter addgadgets. I find them to be better as it starts with startup instead of having to open manually. Thanks for the advice.

Downclocked my proc to 3.0ghz and run the benchmark while overclocking my gpu to 975mhz with +20% power limit. HD7950 with Boost clock speed is only 925mhz.

I think clock per clock, 7870XT is on the same level as GTX 760.
