Processor Advice

Go to solution Solved by Bussinateur,

Thanks for all your reply's I am not going to sell the card my reason is because why sell something that is going to last years especially since I'm barely working the card and I've been considering a i3 now since a few of you mentioned it they seem to be priced around 140-150$ which isn't far out of my budget I really appreciate the responses and I'm none too worried about bottle necking as long as I can play my borderlands lol xD .... But I do have another question how many years can I get out of the Pentium G3258 vs the i3-4160 how much longer will these processors be modern?

Core i3 has hyperthreading so it is a dual-core processor running like a virtual quad core.

Most games now utilize four cores so you should do better gaming with i3.

It is hard to tell when CPUs are gonna be outdated, but I'm guessing you would want to upgrade in 2 years

Hey, I've been running my gaming computer with a old intel Quad 2 Core processor for i don't know how many years. It's always handled any game a through at it with ease and I am looking for something more modern and new to replace it with something of the LGA 1150 area, now I am not looking for something that will greatly out perform my current processor I just want something that is with in the same speed or a little faster but I don't want anything slower. The Intel Pentium G3258 has really caught my eye since it is a unlocked processor and can be overclocked with ease and its with in my budget would this processor perform better then my Intel Quad 2 Core or worse? ~Thanks

Side Notes:

My current computer

Old dell mobo that I took from the garbage years ago ( But I will be changing mobo's to suppport this new chip probally with a asus replacement)

4 gb of ram ( Also will be replacing )

Intel Quad 2 Core 2.5 Ghz

Zotac Gtx 980 Amp! Extreme ( I won this in a contest I did not buy this)

500 Watt PowerSupply ( Enermax I do belive )

Looking forward for your replys I am on a tight budget and I do not want to switch to amd

G3258 will still be quite a big bottleneck for a 980. To get the most out of your system you'll want to save up for at least an i5-4440

But would the G3258 be a improvement? I can't really afford a i5 atm so I was going to buy a mobo that would support the Pentium for now but down the road being able to upgrade i5 with no problems

it should be better but it only has 2 cores and 2 threads which means if you are going to be doing any video editing or having loads of tabs open in your internet browser you may struggle a bit.

Okay thanks yeah I only play games on this machine and I dont play heavy ones the biggest game I play is borderlands 2

So the i3 is better then the Pentium?

yes, but its worth saving for a low end i5...you have a very powerful gpu, and if you want to get the most out of it you need a strong intel processor...the g3258 overclocked is better than a core 2 quad but if you could substantialy overclock the old cpu it would then even maybe be better than the pentium in some games...the g3258 is still better than that old chip overall but FAR from being enough to feed a 980 gpu...not even close...also you want 8gb of ram.

Honestly I still will probably lean towards the Pentium just because I feel as if the i3 or the i5 is more then what I am going to be using I dont even use the full Quad 2 Core

LOL wut? Core 2 Quad and Pentium is gonna bottleneck ur 980 like crazy

Do you live near a Microcenter? The G3258 is only $50 there, and for $50, its a great placeholder CPU for the price, and for anyone learning to OC, $50 is not anything to worry about when it comes to OCing risks. I would invest in a decent board, get a G3258 as a placeholder, and upgrade to an i5 as soon as possible. The G3258 can be thrown into an HTPC later, or in a normal business machine.

At the end of the day, buy whatever suits your needs. I hate seeing that GTX 980 be bottlenecked to this extreme, but since you did not pay for it, i will make an exception in this case. Still, you will want an i5 to make sure that GTX 980 can stretch its legs and run to its potential.

I am aware of the bottleneck but I only play borderlands on this computer and it runs it fine at 120fps so I just want to modernize everything

if you are into modern AAA titles and you game at 1080p and play some of these latest games online you want at least a core i5 haswell...thats all i have you say...sure you can buy a pentium and a motherboard and upgrade to an i5 a little later...but you'll never see what this gpu can do until you get a strong quad core cpu that is intel and of course not amd.

If you want to modernize get an i5, you might as well sell the 980 and get a cheaper gpu if all your playing is borderlands.

I have to agree with selling the 980. You could probably get $500 for it, then buy an i3-4160 + H97 board + GTX 750 Ti and still have $200 cash in your pocket. Or i3-4160 + H97 board + GTX 960 and have $100 in your pocket. It is a waste using a GTX 980 with anything less than an i5-2300.

Selling 980? Blasphemy.

Cpu bottleneck isn't a terrible problem if you do downsampling for image quality over fps.

Later it's less painful to save up for i3/i5 than cash to buy 980.

And screw 960, it's shit compared to r9 285.

R9 285 is shit too. Keeping a 980 makes no sense when the op doesn't want to buy an i5. No reason to use a $550 card to get $150 performance levels out of it.

It makes sense, learn to downsample.

You just want him to sell his 980 because you didn't get it for free.

I think 30 FPS kind of sucks on PC when you're sitting close to the screen. Great for your bigscreen sitting on the couch playing PS4, but it feels wrong on PC.
