Processor Advice

Go to solution Solved by Bussinateur,

Thanks for all your reply's I am not going to sell the card my reason is because why sell something that is going to last years especially since I'm barely working the card and I've been considering a i3 now since a few of you mentioned it they seem to be priced around 140-150$ which isn't far out of my budget I really appreciate the responses and I'm none too worried about bottle necking as long as I can play my borderlands lol xD .... But I do have another question how many years can I get out of the Pentium G3258 vs the i3-4160 how much longer will these processors be modern?

Core i3 has hyperthreading so it is a dual-core processor running like a virtual quad core.

Most games now utilize four cores so you should do better gaming with i3.

It is hard to tell when CPUs are gonna be outdated, but I'm guessing you would want to upgrade in 2 years

It makes sense, learn to downsample.

You just want him to sell his 980 because you didn't get it for free.

He wants him to sell it because it's not being utilized properly.

It kind of bugs me that he got a free 980 and yet is still not willing to use it's full power.

Properly as defined by your opinion.

Again, is GPU utilization isn't close to 100%, downsample and/or turn up settings, enb...etc. to compensate.

It will work just fine until OP saves up enough money for better cpu...etc.

Anyone who has a sister hates the fact that his sister isn't Kasugano Sora.
Anyone who does not have a sister hates the fact that Kasugano Sora isn't his sister.
I'm not insulting anyone; I'm just being condescending. There is a difference, you see...

Have you ran a highend GPU with a Pentium? I ran a 970 with a G3258, and it wasn't pretty putting 30FPS framecaps in even with DSR and all settings maxed out.

And the op doesn't want an i5. The GTX 980 is overpriced and it would be smart to sell high instead of getting GTX 750 Ti level framerates out of it.

i'm just saying that the OP doesn't seem willing to upgrade to a cpu that will make use of the 980.

If you are going to upgrade to an Core i5 or higher later, just keep your Core 2 Quad for now. Granted a Pentium is better than Core 2 Quad, but you will have to upgrade your CPU later on anyways. If I were you, I would keep the Core 2 Quad for a few months, then completely switch and get an i5 with Z97 motherboard.

I know I suggested selling the 980, but if it is too hard then obviously don't.

Also, no point arguing whether OP should sell 980 or not. I bet he's already made up his mind since day 1

This is probably the best alternative. I only recommend getting a G3258 for three scenarios.

Scenario 1: You are new to OCing, and do not want to risk damaging a high end CPU.

Scenario 2: You are in need of a cheap CPU to use as a stopgap or placeholder, but are upgrading relatively soon.

Scenario 3: You are in need of a cheap, decently low TDP processor to use for an HTPC or business machine.

If these 3 scenario's do not meet with the demands of the person that is asking for this specific CPU, then i advise against it. If you are looking for a cheap CPU for longterm, i would go with an i3, or a cheap AMD quadcore (it's better than nothing) and wait until you can afford something later on. I would avoid purchasing an FX with the mindset of it lasting you a few years, because it has already reached the end of its rope in my eyes. It does fine for the most part now, but even on current games, the minimum framerates are just too awful compared to something as cheap as the i3.

Selling the GTX 980 might be difficult, and i do not believe you will get $500 out of it as i've seen brand new cards go on sale for that price. By the time you actually find someone to buy the used GTX 980 (Perhaps more likely to be sold used around $400-$450 USD) you will only have enough of a budget for a Z97 board, unlocked i5, and an entry level gaming GPU. Sure, it would be less of a bottleneck, but it would be just as easy to simply work a month or two for the spare cash to throw into a better cpu and mobo anyways.

Ultimately, the choice is up to OP. I would just try to give him every possible option without trying to force him into any single one. That is pretty much all we can do at this point anyways.
