Third Monitor Suggestion 1080p or 1440p

Hayate-sama

I 'm currently looking for a third monitor for my rig.

I'm currently run dual monitor setup (2 x U2414H 1080p) powered by a i7 4770k + 32GB ram + 1 x 3GB 780 (not ti)

My problem is I really want a 1440p monitor, mostly for the extra height, but the price is a little problem. My target is the U2715H ~ 576usd.

Logically I would go for another U2414H, price is reasonable (~231usd), same model and I can game in surround mode.

But those extra pixel look so alluring T_T.

Any helpful tip ?

note: in my country, I can resell my old monitor for a very good price. 4 months ago I sold my 2.5 years old U2312hm for 150usd, so buy a 1080p now and resell it later wouldn't be very bad.

5760 x 1080 >>> 1440p IMO.

You have two of the best 1080p 24" IPS monitors out there, adding a third is a no brainer. You'll need a second 780 tho.

Have you considered the 1440p in the middle and two 1080p on the side?

Then get a vesa mount to line-up the 1080p in the middle of the 1440p (or make one).

If you really want surround probably just buying a 3-way vesa mount stand or making one would be better if you want the extra height.

Well, I can either drop the quality to medium or choose to play in one screen, I would rather wait for the next gen card or go SLI with another cheaper option like the 960 - 970.

That is my initial plan, 1080 - 1440 - 1080, however the price of a 1440 or rather U2715h while is really for a Ultrasharp, I can buy 2 U2414H with that price

If he wanted a surround setup he wouldn't be speaking of the 1440p option.

@Hayate-sama

You quoted prices in USD and gave no indication of your country, so I can only assume you are in the US.

In that case you can get a 27" 1440p monitor for as low as $350.

By the way, welcome to the forum.

Please remember to follow your own threads. Thanks.

Sorry, my location is Vietnam and it is really hard to find a cheap 1440 monitor here.

What bugging me now is how to upgrade these babies in the future.

the 1080 x 3 route will give me Surround + cheaper investment but if I decided to go 1440 x 3 in the future I might have to sell all of them cheap.

the 1440 route will give more screen to use, assumed better picture quality but with a larger initial investment + no surround. Future upgrade to 1440x3 will be easier for my wallet though.

My opinion now is leaning to the 1080x3 bit

Tomorrow I will cleanup my desk to make space for the new monitor, hope I will get more advice by then.

@iHammmy: I have enough for the 1440p but with that kind of price (500+) I can only bought one per year.

Well for a start do you have the graphics setup to power games at 1080p surround resolution?

Games will run like, 1/3 the framerate compared to playing on a single monitor. And some games are just terrible in surround.

If you don't intend to play games across 3 monitors, then you don't need to set up surround and the accompanying graphics power.

Well as far as my research goes, one 780 can push 1080 surround to ~60fps with medium setting.

However as you said many game are not optimized for surround and I believe with 1440p like resolution, AA will not be really necessary.

So the story is kinda like, if I 'm gonna use 3 x monitors then at least I should try Surround but with my current graphic power, one 1440 might be a better idea.

So really there aren't any good answer for this question.

Try and get one of those korean 1440p monitors, most of them overclock well (albiet most of them struggle at 120hz) but something like 96hz might be good

Which brand/name should I looking for ?

With a 780 I'd rather play on a single 1440p screen. Its a more consistent experience (and performs better than 1080p surround)

As well as not having games break or look awkward especially with different screen coloration and the bezels.

If you could link us to local sellers we might be able to find a good monitor for you.

This is a seller I usually go to, they have good service and closed to my home, local importer of MSI and razer too.

This seller offer me U2715H for 577USD (reg price is 594 USD), they currently are the only seller in Vietnam offer U2715H with 3 years official warranty.

Umm, $577 = VND 12,300,000

There are other 1440p monitors that are cheaper than that on those sites?

What about this U2713HM for VND 11,488,000 ($539)?

That was the previous gen model, same manufacturer, picture quality is almost the same but the new model have thinner bezel (8mm)

there is another 1440 from Asus PB278Q but it is not a IPS panel

Now I'm leaning to the 1440p option, it will gonna serve me for at least a few year to come and who know after a few month/year we could use surround with different resolution monitor
