I'd get the 5200, considering what it comes with for that price.

My arsenal: i7-9700k Gaming Rig, an iPhone, and Stupidity.

The 5300 is just the new generation of 5xxx series. I'd buy the 5300 personally, but the 5200 bundle is better value... or sometimes they are on sale, the 7100 bundle

The projects never end in my line of work.

Canon T5i, the competitor to the D5300.

Or wait a few weeks or days and get the new T6s from canon

t2i t3i t4i t5i  BODY ONLY and pick a decent non-kit  lens http://lenshero.com/

maybe the  Canon EF 50/1.8 II lens?

Why would you use the 50mm as your only lens?

The kit lens is perfect to start with, it gives you the entire range of focal distances you need to take pictures on vacation etc.

@OP don't only get a 50mm, great lens, but not designed to be your only lens. IT doesn't even have IS

Also, get the T6s, if your gonna get a new Canon Rebel DSLR, you should get the T6s, came out just last week

The 18-55 kit lens that comes with new aps-c canon dslr's are actually quite good. They have very good af motors, good image stabilization and has a decent zoom range. They are also quite sharp. Here is a pic i took this weekend using my canon kit lens on my t5i.

Have a look here:

http://snapsort.com/compare/Nikon-D5200-vs-Nikon-D5300

D5300 is improvement over 5200 but I don't think its enough to justify the $200 difference.

I recommend you also look up the Sony A58 (408 USD for it + kit lens + a bunch of other stuff). That's the camera I decided to go for in the end a few months ago. It should be quite a bit cheaper than the D5300 as well and with that money you can an extra lens (50mm, F/1.8 from Sony is a great addition to the kit lens).

The biggest advantage, other than price, is that the A58 has in-body image stabilization. I wouldn't really consider Canon because the Nikon seems (to me) like the better camera, unless you start taking the new T6S into consideration but that's 750 dollars for the body alone.

There are benefits and drawbacks to all three so I recommend you and your brother sit down and look at all the cameras. If you can, visit a store and check them out in real life as well. How the camera feels in the hand can be important (and then you can also see the difference between optical and electronic viewfinder and decide which one you like the best).

Two things to remember is that:

1) The camera body is not as important as most people think. An entry level camera with a really good lens will be as good, if not better, than a really high end body with an entry level lens.

2) Buying a good camera won't make your photos that much better. What will make your photos better is learning the settings available to you on a DSLR and how to use them properly. Knowing how to take a good photo (how to frame it, what to focus on and so on) is also very important. DigitalRev TV has a really interesting series where they give pro photographers really shitty cameras and they usually end up being pretty good.

5200. 5300 isnt a huge upgrade. If he has the money, sure, grab a 5300, but it's not necessary.

I would also reccomend picking up the 35mm 1.8 as well. Its pretty cheap, and is an amazing lens. I NEVER use my kit lens. I have used it....twice out of the thousands of pictures I have taken in the last year.

If you need a variable zoom, I would recommend a Tamron or Sigma 17-55 2.8 to replace the kit lens.

From someone who has had a 5200 for a year and taken several thousand pictures, the only thing I would want more, would be a much more expensive full-frame camera. (I'm starting to really really consider just biting the bullet and buying one)

I would skip the whole D5000 series, and either pay less and get the d3000 series or pay more and get the d7000 series, unless you really want the articulating screen
