Best to support my 4k needs

Fulu
Go to solution Solved by zappian,

Hmm don't know if you missed my first post but I play on 4k screen and a 2k screen at the same time. Eve never stops running.

Go for the 8 gb card then.

Hello everyone so first time on Linus Tech Tips Forums and had a question.

So right now I'm running a GTX 780 and hitting vram cap trying to play Most of my games at 4k while have eve or youtube open on my 1440p screen on the side.

I was wondering if going with two 970s/980s 4gb or two R9 290x 8gig would be the best choice. Everyone one I talk to says 4gigs is enough for a 4k screen and 1440p screen. I want to make sure sense I want to run eve full settings on one and play games like metro on the other.

Other Specs

AMD FX-9370 4.4Ghz

ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z AM3+

G.Skills Trident X 32gig 4x8GB 240-pin DDR3

500GB Blaze SSD + 2x2GB WD Black

1300watt Thermaltake Glod Plus

GTX 780

Just like to first start off ill be getting Each card 2 months from each other every 4 pay checks. So 2 R9s or 2 GTX?

Two 290x 8GB would possibly be the best depending on how much vram that game takes up (if you're hitting the vram cap with a single 780, I'd imagine you'd hit the 4GB cap with SLI/Crossfire), but two 290x 4GB should be just fine. 980's are a pretty bad value and 970's only have 3.5GB realistically usable vram and they perform significantly worse than the 290x at 4k.

I would suggest a 4 gig GTX 980 SLI will probs be best. But to be honest, you will probably need to upgrade it in a year or two.

This guy makes good points.

Consistently.

best bang for the buck, grab an r9 295x2! they're much cheaper than sli 980s.

forget 970s they're effectively a 3.5gb card so you'll not get much of an advantage over your 780.

980s would be the best current solution but they'd cost almost double (in the uk) the price of a 295x2

Gaming PC: • AMD Ryzen 7 3900x • 16gb Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3200mhz • Founders Edition 2080ti • 2x Crucial 1tb nvme ssd • NZXT H1• Logitech G915TKL • Logitech G Pro • Asus ROG XG32VQ • SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless

Not sure if that CPU would be up to it but 2 cross 290x 8gigs from sapphire would best best for what u are doing, you may get away with just one..................

9370 is fine for 4k, higher resolution = less cpu bottlenecks. 1080p would be a different story though

What do you mean by my CPU might not be up to it? Is there something wrong with the 9370 4.4ghz 8core?

My other post explains it, don't worry about it at 4k.

AMD cpus boast amazing specs on paper but i bet that would be almost on par with a 4690k, their ticks just arnt as high, this is coming from a AMD guy soon to be a intel guy...............  B)  B)

So for now just go with the R9 290x 8gig over the GTX 980 then?

Y'know it's hard, because with a single 290x you're likely not going to go over that 4GB vram limitation if you play at 60fps. But, when you start to get into crossfire and turning up those settings, that 4GB vram can suddenly become limited.

I think the most realistic option would be to buy a 290x 4GB, wait for R9 300 series, sell the 290x, and buy a 380x/390x or whatever they're calling their new card. If you don't want to do that though, and you plan on crossfiring 290x's, maybe the 8GB versions are the best option.

Either way I wouldn't recommend the 980.

Dunno how well the 290x can drive the 8GB.

This would be fine.

You will need a mean PSU with that cpu however.

I was thinking more of the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202129sense it has the 8gB over the 4gb. Also do you think a 1300watt PSU will be enough?

4 gb is enough for a single 4k monitor for now , 3.5 Gb isnt for example thats why i wont recommend a 970.

Your psu should be enough.

But the 8 GB cards inst a bad idea , its simply too expensive over the 4 GB one.
