My logitech G500 is sadly on its way out. When i lift the mouse and place it back on the mouse mat it occasionally doesnt recognise that it has been replaced for a second or two. Certainly not ideal.

Currently i am looking at buying a g500s from ebay since its basically the same thing. Just small changes that i likely wont notice.

I thought my requirements were fairly reasnable, turns out that i cant find a suitible replacement. Any ideas?

Requirements:

  • aesymetric, for right handed use
  • 3 side buttons for my thumb, preferably in G500 style placement
  • Ability to switch between smooth scroll and stepped scroll. (I use this all the time, i could probably get used to not having it, but it makes web browsing so much nicer)
  • Not insane price. eg the g502 costs £62($93), i payed £30 ($35) for my G500 4.5 years ago, a g500s will cost £40($60) . So around or under £40 please.

Due to smooth scrolling being very rare, i am open to mice that dont feature it. But 3 side buttons is a 100% must have.

On a side note, why have mice got so expensive. If a g500 cost £30 why do the new models cost double that? Its insane

Thanks for any help.

G500 for those may not have seen one:

Logitech G402/G502.

What do they know of England, who only England know?

That is an option, but it doesnt have smooth scroll. Different button layout as well, i guess on second thought that layout would work with how i use the buttons. But like i said it is totally an option.

My side button layout:

Front of mouse ---------> back of mouse

Melee --> bound to shift --> crouch

I would no longer be able to bind the middle button to shift though due to also using the 1st and 3rd buttons for the web browser, which would become 2nd and 3rd for web browser. So i would have to set up the buttons for every game i play. Totally not a first world problem :P

Nice to see someone else who lives in a chavy place in the NE of england :)

The G502 has a free scroll wheel as well, though, as Linus said, it's a little slippy, due to the metal construction. The G402 also has the same amount of buttons on the side of the mouse, though, one of them needs to be bound to something in the Logitech software. :)

The closest thing you are going to get to the G500 (I loved mine :c) is the G502.

The biggest difference between the G500-/s is the 'sniper' button, which I find little to no use for. The thumb button layout were better on the G500. Apart from that, then they are very similar.

If you are able to find a G500s at a reasonable price (they are near identical to the G500), then I would go for it. Or else your best bet is the G502.

The button layout beween the 500 and 500s looks the same?

I meant the difference between G500-/s and the G502, sorry.

The G500 and G500s is virtually the same from what I know of. I wished that I would have gotten a G500s instead of the G502 I got back from warranty. But alas, you shouldn't complain about free stuff.

I've been using a G500 for a few years, and I myself have started looking at mice.  From the looks of it, it looks like the Corsair Sabre looks very appealing, though it's a tad above budget (RGB is £50 on Amazon at first glance).  It has DPI up/down, and two side buttons and one behind the scroll wheel, very similar to the G500.

And RGB.  That's always a plus.

snip

in all seriousness buy another g500 - have you tried a different mouse pad?

"gaming" mice are a niche - manufacturers spend a "fair" amount of time and effort designing and researching them over normal every day mice and as such they charge a premium as they sell very little units compared to something like an OEM HP granma desktop pc unit

Sim Rig:  Valve Index - Acer XV273KP - 5950x - GTX 2080ti - B550 Master - 32 GB ddr4 @ 3800c14 - DG-85 - HX1200 - 360mm AIO

Long Live VR. Pancake gaming is dead.

Thanks for the responses.

Today i have not had a single issue with the mouse. Even though i tried it in two computers yesterday with the issue reproducible on both, today the mouse has functioned just like it usually would.

Hopefully this issue doesn't become persistent. But if the mouse does start acting up again it would seem that i will be buying a g500s.

Mionix mice are nice, but they only have two buttons which isn't ideal for me due to how i use my mouse in games.

The corsair one looks decent too, but i dont think i could get used to using the button above the scroll wheel for sprinting in games. Im also not a fan of the new corsair logo, which is an issue when it lights up.

I did actually try the mouse on another mouse mat, it is a hard plastic BriteMat liquid (which i do not recommend, mice kinda stick to it, but its just for an office pc and the graphic is nice so whatever). The issue persisted on the other mouse mat, but there was no issue on my desk (wood veneer).

I bought the mousemat because my desk has been worn away by the mouse. I am tempted to get a Mionix Propus 380 or something similar down the line, but there is nothing wrong with the current steel series mouse mat so i will stick with that for now.

Thanks for the help :)

  • 2 weeks later...

A small update.

I have found the cause of the issue. Sunlight. When i lift my mouse sunlight shines on the mouse mat under it and it stops working. If i close my blinds the mouse functions correctly which is why it started working again (cause the sun dont shine every day in the UK especially in winter). So i guess i am just going to keep my room dimly lit or lit by ceiling light from now on.
