OK So Which Graphics Card(s) Should I Buy Now?

AlwaysFlexin

I'm planning a build that I will be buying at the end of February. I want to play AAA games around 4k for my budget of $2000. I don't need storage or a PSU so that's why they aren't included below. Here is the build that I had planned for a few weeks now. If I want to game at 4k, should I consider different video card(s) now, especially since 4k will need all the VRAM I can get?

Thanks for your opinions.

I'd go SLI 980s, because 2 970s won't last long... Go with one now, and buy another later...

For my budget I will only be able to afford 1 of them, which I believe isn't enough for 4k?

you don't need all the vram you can get to currently play AAA at 4k,4gb is ample. unless you play nothing but shadow of mordor..

I'd go 2 980s, which is what I plan to buy this week for my 4k monitor.

don't go with 970s, they're only really 3.5gb due to their split memory bus. so they'd become the bottle neck much sooner than 980s.

or failing that look at an r9 295x2 they've dropped massively in price and still pack a punch at 4k..hell I'm playing all my games at medium settings with a 2gb 770...

Laptop: MacBook Pro M1 512gb

I'd highly suggest waiting a little while to see what AMD can deliver. Their next cards may make quite a bit a room in the 4k market.

Honestly the 295X2 might be the best bet for 4K at the moment... Alternatively get a 980 and add one later.

its hit and miss. I get 60fps flat at 4k in games such as call of duty advanced warfare, grid: autosport and farcry 3

but in farcry 4, shadow of mordor, crysis 3 - no chance, more like 30-45 fps. its certianly a playable and enjoyable experience - sometimes I drop to 1440p to get 60+fps.

Hmm, thanks for the information. I feel that with ONE card, this is plenty of power for right now, especially since I'll most likely purchase a 2nd one a few weeks after.

I wish I had two gtx980's... kinda.

I should also mention that most demanding titles today are using 3.8~3.9 gb of vram at 4k so I wouldn't personally buy two gtx980 4gb cards to SLI. I expect there will soon be a crossover point in 4k gaming where 4gb wont be enough vram and the added gpu power won't really help

I would LOVE am 8gb gtx980. I would sell mine and take a hit to buy an 8gb version

final note: the last three amd cards I bought r9 290s r9 280x all caused mw to need to reinstall windows due to driver problems. Nvidia not even once.
