According to a Reuters report, Sony is expected to announce 1,000 job cuts in its Smartphone division on February 2, 2015. These cuts will take place in addition to job cuts announced by the Sony Mobile division last year, which will be completed by March 2016. Sony's end goal is to cut 5,000 jobs by then.

Sony Mobile's workforce is going to shrink by 30%, as a result. These job cuts are expected to be announced in the company's earnings report.

Sony Mobile will reportedly post a $1.9 billion loss in the forthcoming earnings report. The Japanese giant is looking at various options, including selling off their Smartphone business.

Sony smartphones might die soon, but Sony isn't going anywhere soon. You might be underestimating the size of Sony's conglomerate.

Stop trying to be the premium electronic device seller maybe? There is only room for one Apple in this world.

Sony has one of the best flagships in my opinion, awesome camera, one of the first manufacturers that started making waterproof flagships etc.
Their mid range devices are too expensive though.

And Sony won't die, thinking that is just stupid. The same way people thought Nokia died when they sold their mobile department. It's just a part of the company that is failing. :P

The problem with Sony phones is that you can't buy them.

Here in the US, it's incredibly difficult to get your hands on a Sony phone.

Umm...Sony has been in such deep shit lately that they've been SELLING OFF BUILDINGS to stay out of the red. Their divisions are bit of a mess, gaming is the one bright light for them (barely).

Their movie division? A joke when it comes to the Marvel franchises (they've already sold back 2 because they can't sustain them), Spiderman and F4 (if the new one fails) will go back next.

Sony as a company is not sunshine and rainbows, they are largely fighting to avoid overall failure and have been for a while, the Japanese Yen has screwed them over in the past and they also suffer from "not letting regional divisions operate on their own" syndrome. Sony Japan treats every region as if it were Japan and operates that way, they don't realize that North America is different from Europe which is different from Asia; they just don't give a shit about those differences in conducting business.

Doesnt mean they are going to go out of business soon. And you couldnt be more right on the regional business thing.

I wouldn't say that they are difficult to get - Sony store has both the unlocked z3 and z2 in stock.  Unless you mean difficult to get as in price wise, then yea they are expensive.

Rock On!

I don't really understand this... HTC and Sony both struggle when they make great smartphones, but Samsung releases shit every year and dominates the android market

Intel i7 3770k, Maximus V Formula, 32GB G.Skill 1600MHz RAM, ASUS DCUII GTX 670

They barely started selling them with T-Mobile last year and Verizon this year.

The one at Verizon isn't even the flagship phone, it's been nerfed. It's no coincidence the success of the Galaxy S3 started with doing away with carrier variants and selling one model across all 4 major US carriers.

Only slightly, and plus it has Qi Charging at Verizon.
