$200 GPU/Mid-Range Card

I'm building a PC soon blah blah blah, I'm assuming if I were to ask what $200 card to get most of you would say the R9 280? Do I use the GTX 960 or R9 280, what I really want to know is the GTX 960 better then the R9 280. Another reason I want a gtx is for shadow play (<-- whatever its called). Anyway: What GPU do I go for which one has better performance... thanks!

In what ways is the R9 better?

More VRAM, and typically cheaper, with very similar performance.

In what ways is the R9 better?

The R9 280 has 3gb of VRAM, 2gb doesnt really cut it when maxing textures.

In what ways is the R9 better?

R9 280 has >=performance of a 960 and has 50% more vram, so in games like SoM, if you want to play with ultra textures, you're going to get like 300% more fps than the 960 (can't remember the exact numbers, someone linked the benchmarks earlier).

Some current games (like SoM for example) and many future games aren't going to do well with a 960 at higher textures/AA settings.

R9 280x for $205 after rebate

Though if you can go up to $240 it's a huge performance boost to get an R9 290, as Linus said in the GTX 960 SLI video posted today

This looks like the best deal on a 280 right now

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127789

A day or two ago there was actually a PowerColor R9 280 going for $150 after rebate at newegg and a little before then there was a $130 HD 7950 (R9 280 is just an overclocked HD 7950 with a shiny new name).

Like how much better is the 280x over the 280?

Looks like maybe 10-15% better

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1332?vs=1041

It's roughly a linear speedup in performance for price, so I think it's worth paying a little extra for the 280x (for the same reason I think the upgrade up to that Asus R9 290 for $240 is also worth it, whereas upgrading to a GTX 970 probably isn't). But that MSI R9 280 I posted is a really nice 280, so if you can't spare the extra $30 now to get in back in 6 weeks from the MIR the R9 280 is still a great choice.
