For now, the 960 will be fine. The 970 will be good for longer though.

960 does a great job at 1080p, but a 970 will push ultra with no problem and even games up to 1440p or 1080 120hz

if you can afford the extra the 970 is more powerful and will last longer

If you want best frame rate get a 980, the 970 is good as well. 960 is overpriced I think

GTX 970 was never the best 1080p card, 295x2 and 980 are. GTX 970 maxes out pretty much everything at 1080p anyways.

And the 960 is pathetic, performance comparable to a 660 Ti but it will still cost $200-$250 when the 280X spanks it.

Yep. It's simply like this:

GTX 980 - 2048

GTX 970 - 1664

GTX 960 - 1024

Although, true perfection would be as follows:

GTX 980 - 2048

GTX 970 - 1536

GTX 960 - 1024

:D

Everybody here suggesting the more expensive 970... If you're looking for the best bang-for-the-buck card for 1080p gaming, don't even look towards Nvidia.

280/280X does better for cheaper, and 3GB of VRAM is becoming more then just an aftersight when playing AAA titles, newer games are starting to use more then 2GB when maxed out at 1080P with AA on.

Many in the official review thread agree. http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/295902-nvidia-geforce-gtx-960-strix-from-asus/

Why does my fps drop to below 60 in some instances in swtor with everything maxed out? Especially when, according to my Asus gpu monitoring software, I'm using less than 75% of the cards horsepower?

Based on price to performance alone I'd say yes, GTX 970 is still the best of those mentioned but still more expensive than the 960, but you can get more than the 2 gig RAM with the 970.

As far as I know the 960's are limited to 2GB RAM (to hit the price point) but I'd love to know if I'm wrong about that.

Also, you can get more RAM buying a GTX 770 and the 960 performance could very well end up being about the same as a 770 (but this kind of remains to be seen (wait for the benchmarks etc.)), so picking up a second hand 770 might be a better option if you're working within a budget. If money's not that tight I'd personally definitely go for the 970.

If the 960 turns out to have considerably better benchmarks than the GTX 770 and they release a 3Gig VRAM version I'd be tempted to go for that especially if it was over-clocked out of the box, but at that point you're probably going to be looking at paying close to what you'd pay for a 970 anyway.

That's the best I've been able to make of all of it, I could be wrong (I'm sure others should know more). My advice-- wait for the benchmarks, or if you need to buy now and money's not an issue, go for the 970.

...3GB of VRAM is becoming more then just an aftersight when playing AAA titles, newer games are starting to use more then 2GB when maxed out at 1080P with AA on.

Shadow of Mordor needed more than 3GB for the high-def textures pack. GTA V doesn't need that much VRAM (for me that was always going to be the tipping point re. how much RAM to go forward with (I'm not a big GTA fan but that was always going to be the benchmark for me).

A GTX 970 will last longer, wheather it'll last $100 longer, is another matter (that's money you could save for another mid-tier graphics card further on).

Again, 280/280X still hold up for the price better then the 770. And since they're rebranded cards, a second hand 7950 or 7970 will be an even better option then a second hand 770.

To be honest I don't know a lot about Radeon cards, I've always stuck with nVidia for the PhysX, and because I've wanted 3D and now G-Synch, but that stuff seems to be getting more user accessible for Radeon card users by the day (as Linus says: on our doorsteps). If I can get good 3D without hassles and a better quality monitor using Free-Synch I'm absolutely tempted to switch to Radeon but I might even hold out for Occulus (but then I upgrade pretty slowly).

A nice 280X will do you good, if your on a tighter budget. If you have a bit more money to play with, a 290x, or 970 would be even better. Or you could wait for the 380X :3
