My dad is looking to upgrade his old Athlon 64 X2 system. I don't know if he should have a Dual or Quad Core? He doesn't game, put he plays internet chess club a lot, watch videos, uses MS office and storage backup.

i'd suggest a core i3 and a cheap motherboard, something like this:

Or you want Intel then.

Intel i3 4150 or Intel i5 4690K. Though either of the AMD options will be fine.

intel i3 better choice: stronger cores, more energy efficient...more user friendly.

i5-4690K: massively over kill for a chess PC...IMHO.

I would go with a high end i3 as they have good internal graphics aswell, there is no need for a i5 for him, maybe an SSD with the money they will make any pc much faster
